Mentioned in the Morning Commute thread, and it does indeed need its own thread.

My weekly mileage varies. If I just do my regular commute it’s 35 miles. Right now with the kids in summer camp I’ve been replacing three or four of those 3.5 mile one-way trips with 13 mile one-way trips on the Xtracycle. When I’m not tired from dragging the kids around, I would usually do at least two longer commutes (Through Rock Creek or a lap or two at Hains Point or both if I’m feeling sassy). When the weather is nice there’s usually one family bike ride over the weekend in the 10-15 mile round trip range.

In general, I think I do between 40 and 80 miles a week.

Just curious, does anyone else ride for transportation on the weekends? It seems like most people are chiming in with totals that are commute + training/long rides. My total is commute + rides to the park/store/church/ice cream!

If I’m picking up stuff close by that fits in a backpack, I’ll often go by bike (weekend or weekday). Sometimes I’ll go to the park or whatever by bike, but usually it’s the whole family going so that’s not an option.
Most of the significant transportation drives on summer weekends are 50mi+ though.

    Animal!

Haha, This made me think of one of the little animals inside a Flintsone’s machine looking at the camera and saying “Eh, it’s a living…”. For those of you too young to remember the stone age, The Flintstone was the most popular TV cartoon series until The Simpsons.

Wikipedia “Often the “prehistoric” analog to a modern machine uses an animal.[7] For example, when a character takes photographs with an instant camera, inside the camera box, a bird carves the picture on a stone tablet with its beak. In a running gag, the animal powering such technology would frequently break the fourth wall, look directly into the camera at the audience and offer a mild complaint about his job.”

    Steve Eunpu rides more.

Concerning utility rides on the weekend, one great perk of hauling a trailer on the job is the ability to pick up groceries on the way home. So most of my weekend riding is just for fun.
