Sigh, Holmes Run Trail is still not open yet at Columbia Pike. It is clear up to the Parklawn pool, but the same “trail closed” signs follow.
Last week I called the Fairfax Park Authority to get an update on the trail. I got routed to the Trail manager in the Planning and Development Office. After a couple of voicemail exchanges, I was directed to the Wastewater Design and Construction Branch in the Fairfax Sewer Authority. I spoke to the project manager for the sewer repair project who told me that the repairs to the sewer break have finally been completed. Several rain storms in April and May had set back their schedule. This past week they finalized what repairs will need to be done to the trail. Construction equipment damaged several of the approaches to the fair weather crossings, some of the concrete stepping stones and the trail itself. The project manager indicated that the trail will be repaired and reopened by the end of September. This will include repaving most of the trail from Columbia Pike to the Parklawn pool.
Also, there is a significant accumulation of sand at the south end of the tunnel heading under I-395 that is hard to see especially if you’re headed south. I’m talking a “let’s build a sandcastle” amount of sand here!
Walked the trail on Sunday, didn’t see any sand at the entrance to the tunnel.
One of the bridges on the Alexandria portion of the trail has been redecked.

Participantcross posted in my morning commute:
There’s a giant hole in the middle lane of M Street (2600 block of Penn Ave between 28th and 26th NW) just after you cross the bridge from Georgetown. There is a police officer and vehicle there with lights on blocking the hole when I rode through this morning around 715.
The eastbound Pennsylvania Avenue cycle track at the intersections of 11th and 12th streets NW are also completely ripped up. Have fun dancing between rough road, a really bad patch/transition along the seam, and the bollards on the pedestrian islands!

The joint in the bike/ped path on the Virginia side of the Roosevelt Bridge has gone from awful to treacherous. A hunk of metal is sticking up. Anyone know which agency to report this to? VDOT?

I thought about bringing a sledgehammer with me on my commuter to mash it back down, but keep forgetting to do it.

Wouldn’t be the first time folks have taken it upon themselves to do maintenance on the TR bridge.

It was being extinguished when I went through, but passable. Probably inhaled a bunch of yucky stuff riding by there though.

I don’t know if this has been reported elsewhere, but…
The connecting trail between 12th St South and George Mason Drive (part of the 12th St Bike Corridor) has been closed for a week or two now. For a *good* reason- the much-needed reconstruction (wider, with less hazardous climb/descent) is in work. Can’t find any info on when it will be completed.
Since the trail also connects to Randolph Elementary, I will expect by Labor Day?
An update, as of Friday Aug 29, ~7:30pm- Still closed, still under construction. Labor Day’s not gonna happen. Who might know?
