ParticipantJust wait until you see what Favola introduces next year, based on extensive research by the Loudon County Sheriff.

at least we don’t have to deal with this BS. The US Bicycle Route System posted this on facebook today.

It is REALLY sad and discouraging to see potential legislation like this come up. Although it’s just a draft right now it’s absolutely mind-numbingly stupid, and in a whacky state like Missouri, crap like this could actually get passed.
Ha. Last week, I briefly took solace in the fact that we’re not (yet) facing that in Virginia. Then I reminded myself of the mandatory sidepath provision in the last Federal transportation bill.

Prompted by mstone – what would the #bikeDC crowd like to see Favola introduce next year, on behalf of cyclists?

Assuming it’s impossible for her to simply revoke the cyclist harassment act, a fitting complement would be a bill requiring motorists to stop for pedestrians waiting to cross at an unsignaled crosswalk or within any crosswalk.

If you are serious, Mark, let’s do lunch.

I’d be up for a working lunch.
PS. I heard on NPR this morning that DC is proposing a slate of cyclist friendly laws. #jealous.

ParticipantFor the record, I was also serious. Cross walks have gotten to be death traps.

ParticipantWe need to send out the masses to video xwalk offenses, create a place to post the vids and shame the drivers. Is it illegal to push an empty baby stroller into a crosswalk and film the result?

ParticipantWe also don’t have $25 bike fees (on top of sales taxes) to contend with as Washington State is proposing: http://blog.oregonlive.com/commuting/2013/02/washington_considers_25_bicycl.html

Shiiiiiiii….
If anything, cyclists should get a tax rebate for every mile they ride, because not only do we pay all the same taxes that go into building and maintaining roads, we help take traffic off them, as well as reduce wear and tear. I think I’ve read that the UK has some sort of reimbursement program for people to buy bikes to ride to work, and it would be sweet if the paltry bike commuter benefit was turned into something like that. At the very least, allow bike purchases to be tax writeoffs, just like having an alternative fuel vehicle or whatever. Hell, my Cervelo practically would’ve paid for itself if we had that!
