Ah, but with coaster brakes you can fool untrained onlookers into thinking you are a master of the fixie skidzz. They’re like the clip-on bowtie of the bike world.

I used to love coaster brakes. When I got my first “grown-up bike,” I chose the kind that had both brakes and gears in the pedals instead of on the handlebars. It was only two-speed, but the most you got in those days was three-speed, anyway. (I still remember my awe when my brother later got a bike with TEN speeds.)

However, with 24 speeds now available to me, and doing a long uphill every day from DC to Bethesda, I can’t imagine wanting to go back to a two-speed bike.
