ParticipantThanks so much, Chris S.
Two big questions:
1) where does trail maintenance fall in all of this? BIKEArlington? Paving? Not “capital”?
2) where would protected bike lanes fall? Would that only be in one-off, specified projects (e.g. Army Navy)May 14, 2014 at 3:45 pm #1001190americancyclo

East Falls Church Streets
This is the project that is implementing some of the street enhancements envisioned in the East Falls Church Sector Plan. May include improvements to Sycamore Street, Washington Boulevard, Lee Highway, Westmoreland Street and Fairfax Drive.Construction appears to have been pushed by 2 years from the prior CIP.
Does this involve the realignment of the trail at the Washington intersection or any of the talk about realigning through Banneker to take out those hard turns at the foot of Brandymore Castle?

Should be operations and maintenance budget, under whatever department has responsibility. (E.g., parks) Major resurfacing would typically be a capital expense, again under the appropriate agency. This is one of the places where moving the trails from parks to transportation could possibly help, as repaving a MUP is a huge number for the parks department and line noise for the transportation department. (Not necessarily, though, if the transportation department just doesn’t care.)

ParticipantAnd no Intersection of Doom plan or even contingency?

Almost certainly Parks Department which I haven’t gone through yet, just skimmed. All of the above are from the Transportation section.

Army Navy yes. Clark/Bell cycletrack falls in under Crystal City Streets. That may also be what Eads will be done under.

Nothing spelled out (other than the existing project which doesn’t really solve the issue), though I didn’t expect it yet, not til the Rosslyn Sector Plan gets adopted with a solution.
The other glaring omission in my mind, the “Hoffman-Boston Connector” AKA the “South East Passage” AKA the “Army-Navy Country Club Connection”
Really? We’re not gonna even design that in the next 10 years?

Maybe in the Parks Department since it is a shared use path?

Isn’t that Memorial Dr. to 18th St? Or is there another location I’m not aware of?

ParticipantFrom the Parks Section.
Parks Maintenance Capital
Trail modernization – “milling and paving, asphal repair, drainage and site furnishings”
FY15 – $1million for sections of Custis and Four Mile Run Trails
FY16 – $100,000 for sections of Bluemont Junction Trail
FY17 – $550,000 for sections of Four Mile Run TrailFour Mile Run Near Stream Improvements
Includes planning for “South Park” along four mile run between Arlington & Alexandria, near where the bridge is being taken down. May include trail upgrades.Long Bridge Park
Other than the under-design playground, all future phases are on-hold, leaving the direct Mt. Vernon Trail connection in limbo.Jennie Dean Park
The Jennie Dean Park master plan and reconstruction has been pushed back significantly from the previous CIP. The Jennie Dean Park master planning process may be an excellent opportunity to get an improved Four Mile Run Trail connection in the vicinity of the Weenie Beanie.May 14, 2014 at 6:17 pm #1001208chris_s

Arlington has an easement to construct a connection from approximately the dead end of South Queen Street to the Access Road.

Put another way, how do these numbers compare to what is spent on road repair?

Street paving: $12-14 million per year is the new substantially increased proposal.

ParticipantStreet paving certainly benefits us too. In fact, probably more since a car probably won’t have a hospital-worthy accident if it hits a pothole or waves or bad fill job.
Excited that they are spending more money there. Nothing better than flying down a long stretch on smooth pavement.

ParticipantHow important do others think the Army-Navy Country Club Connection is? Would it connect to the future, proposed Pike Blvd when/if it goes down that far?
How easy is it to speak at the meeting tonight if one was away in GW National Forest until last night/this morning and didn’t sign up to speak? How long and unpleasant is the meeting?
Thanks!

Personally, I think that connection is key for South Arlington — it is very difficult to cross 395, and not having it means longer, more dangerous rides for people trying to go that way. That means fewer people riding, and also means the ones that are riding are less safe.
