ParticipantWe are so screwed if NVRPA doesn’t plow the W&OD and NPS doesn’t do the MVT.
Was there any consideration of the southside Arlington Blvd trail between Fort Myer and Pershing? It works in conjunction with the 110 trail.

Eh, when this works as expected and tons of people are riding on the cleared trails, we’ll have more data to convince NVRPA and (hopefully) NPS.
I think the new trail along 50 is just too new. At the moment, there are two not-too-horrible alternatives to taking it: (1) go through Fort Myer (diversion from Pershing to 2nd St S) or (2) take surface streets through Clarendon/Courthouse. Neither are ideal, but at least they’re ok (as opposed to, say, the Bluemont, for which there isn’t really a good alternative).

I was thinking the same thing for the 4MR portion from Shirlington to MVT. Don’t get me wrong, serious props to Arlington for doing it, but if it just dumps people into a new problem area than they may end up with some beautifully cleared areas with few riders. I hope that’s not the case. Which is a good reminder to myself to write NPS again inquiring about the possibility of at least plowing some of the MVT from OT to Roosevelt.

Awesome, but PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE encourage them to plow up to Lynn & Lee, which is the end of the ArlCo plowing, and will allow those of us who want to avoid the Key Bridge to do so.

IIRC from last year, NVRPA does clear snow from the W&OD, but they do it with a snowblower instead of a plow and they aren’t super quick about it.

I think Arlington might have taken a crack at the WOD a few times too…

Oh god, don’t tell NVRPA. We’re going to start seeing SNOW PLOWS MUST STOP REQUIRED BY LAW signs all over the W&OD now.

NVRPA’s W&OD snow policy at the present

Participant5.2 miles of the Custis Trail from Lynn Street to W&OD Trail (Washington & Old Dominion)
I may be misremembering, but I believe the Custis Trail actually ends at the intersection of Lee Highway just past East Fall Church. It runs contiguous with the W&OD from the intersection east of Patrick Henry (perhaps renamed “Intersection of the Giant Blank Sign”) to this point. I’m not sure what that means for Arlington’s ability to clear it or not. I guess it depends on which trail is on top of the other?
However, given the significant amount of use this section of the trail gets from people accessing the EFC Metro, I think it strongly belongs on the priority list.
Likewise with the Ballston Connector (wait! another “Intersection of the Giant Blank Sign!”), which is a very important pedestrian connection to the Ballston Metro.November 13, 2014 at 8:18 pm #1014682mstone
Participantgood grief, he couldn’t even state a snow policy without scolding cyclists

Participant“Years ago, when the trail was purely recreational some cross country skiers would enjoy the trail when it was snow covered, and there was less pressure from cyclist to have it cleared.”
Sigh. I will think about this while ironically skiing to work. With hope, there will be a decent track parallel to the plowed trail.

Given the usual local snow conditions, I need to get some new skis that don’t ice up like my badly scratched up 35 year old ones do.

I think there is some good CC skiing in and around Kyiv if you’re into that. FYI.

ParticipantThis is so to say “baller,” but they will need to do it right to avoid black-ice fueled craziness. Studded tires – yep!
