ParticipantPurely out of curiosity…where does the 17 mile number come from? Strava (and RideWithGPS) shows a full loop as 15.6ish miles, so I’m just curious if the Bluemont is figured in there or something like that.

ParticipantGreat Job!
I will be printing out a bunch for the W-L Bike Club members. It would be nice for the club to ride it again and use the map to entice their parents for a weekend ride.
It is funny how many Arlington bikers that have no idea what you are talking about when you say, “I did the Loop.” I might have to leave the spare at home and stuff a few of these in my saddle bag to reduce the, “Ya know, you hang a left at Weenie Beenie, go past Goodwill, then you’ll see a caboose,,,,,” explanation.March 19, 2013 at 3:43 pm #965152Jason B

Strava for the Loop is funky. There appears to be 15 versions of it, and every time I ride it complete, being careful to stay on the yellow brick road, it never shows up as a full segment.

There’s so much to do in Arlington–send it to your friends, print it out and slap it on the frig, do whatever you like with it!
Love it. Gives me all sorts of ideas: I’m going to pass it along to the woman who runs the gym to hand out to people looking for lunchtime bike routes (we’re just across the Memorial Bridge).
Have you guys gotten it into a backpack mailer to go home with kids? Maybe in connection with Bike/walk to school day?

ParticipantIt’s an approximation–throw in some Bluemont, maybe some R-B Corridor bike lanes, a few blocks to get there from your house and you’re right about there!

True, but plotting it by hand in RideWithGPS gives me basically the same number as the Strava segment (the segment that I always pick up begins and ends at Westover park).

Again, this is just out of curiosity…the infographic is great and I’m not trying to critique it or anything.

I think it’s the fact that the 15.5ish mile Arlington Loop as we know it used to be the 16.7 mile Arlington Triangle (I assume that they rounded 16.7 up to 17).
Here’s the description on the outdated BikeWashington.org site: http://bikewashington.org/routes/triangle/triangle.htm
The Arlington Triangle has 2 major differences to the Arlington Loop:
1) there was no Four Mile Run underpass for Glebe and I-395, so you had to detour over the pedestrian bridge and through Shirlington
2) there was no underpass on the north side of the creek at Carlin Springs Rd, so you had to go past the frisbee golf and playground areas in Bluemont Park. Here’s a map of the Arlington Triangle on Google Maps: http://goo.gl/maps/wgZQm
P.S. – The infographic looks cool and is very informative for cyclists new to the area. I like the fact that it resembles the shape of an eye looking towards DC in profile.

ParticipantKudos to the graphic designer(s). I like that there is a separate graphic for “bar” (though Shirlington has at least one I guess?).

ParticipantLooks great Tim! As for the mileage, I always round up anyway so this is perfect for me…. no need to turn on the Garmin…. it’s simply 17 miles.. yeah!

I seemed to average just over 16.25 miles using the W&OD route (mostly north bank of 4MR), about 16.5 miles using the 4MRT route (south bank).

That’s because it’s 15.6 clockwise and 17 miles counter-clockwise. The extra climbing causes the difference.

Can we apply this to #BAFS? I think it’d bump me and my team up quite a bit!

That’s what will get us to victory with the national bike challenge!
