Dirt
ParticipantWe’ve got a dirt road death march planned for Sunday. We’re pioneering new frontiers in monumentally stupid rides.

ParticipantHmmm…it’s 81 miles from my house to Purcellville on the W&OD. Maybe I’ll run out there on Sunday if my wife hasn’t planned anything on my behalf. I’m also hoping that on Saturday I’ll be able to pick up the R3 I’ve been lusting after **knocks on every piece of wood within 50 feet**…this would be a great opportunity to put some miles on it.

ParticipantR3?! Whoa, congrats.
My house to Purcellville and back is almost exactly 80 miles too. It’s just a bit too boring/not motivating after Ashburn/Carolina Brothers. Dirt roads sound more fun.

ParticipantPalisades to Carolina Brothers and back is about 65 miles. It should be pretty easy to find 15 more. My house to Carolina Brothers and back is 56 miles. I need a circuitous route.

Maybe R3, although I did really like the SuperSix…I’ll have to test ride them both again, but Freshbikes has both in stock (loving that place more and more). They both have pluses and minuses over each other (R3 rides smoother, SuperSix feels more responsive), but it honestly may come down to aesthetics, and the Cervelo wins that battle by a lot. But my wife seemed cool with me spending the proceeds from selling my motorcycle on a nice road bike (hooray for motorcycles holding their value EXTREMELY well), so I figure go big or go home, even if that means I’m a slow rider on a fast bike.

That’s also where I lose interest…actually, the stretch from Reston to the west side of Leesburg, in both directions, bores the piss out of me for some reason. But this is my one chance to complete a Strava challenge without much effort, so I may suck it up and get it over with, or maybe just run out to Reston and then do a couple Arlington Loops on the way back.

I’ll probably be doing the complete W&OD and Arlington loop on Sunday for my November century. If I can talk my other riders into it, We’ll get off the W&OD at Dry Mill and head up Woodburn/Harmony Church to Hamilton. On the way back it’s the gentle rollers from Hamilton Station to Clarks Gap and then the Dry Mill downhill run.
Maybe I’ll see a few forumers out there.

ParticipantI’m signed up, going to do it Sunday but not decided on route yet. A member of the BikeArlington Club on Strava did a 100 mile loop I might try: http://app.strava.com/runs/27968899
Sorry I haven’t figured out all the Strava club / Forum member name match-ups yet. (idea for a new thread?)
How are the roads to Point of Rocks and back down the MD side?

This is a loop that we’ve done many times. It is a lot of fun and the roads are quite good. http://app.strava.com/activities/8477227 That is one of the ways to get from Point-o-Rocks back to DC.

Those are two that I looked at a while back. Though both have changed quite a bit in construction over the last 3 years, they are still both amazing bikes. I LOVE my R3 and I’m very happy that I bought it. I’m also happy that I got it when I did. It is interesting to see how they’ve changed over the years. The R3 has become a little less racy. The SuperSix has pretty much kept its focus. Both are lovely bikes and you’ll have a blast with either.

ParticipantHere it is on RWGPS. I think it downloads into the Garmin better from there: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1171493

ParticipantTotally wimped out on this one…did 40ish miles though, so that’s gotta count for something. As much as I love riding, doing it in cool/cold weather just takes a lot of the fun away for me. I guess I just need to HTFU.

ParticipantI could not do this due to schedule constraints. I know some of you made it, so congrats. I am just sad they are not doing a Turkey Takeoff this year — for once, the stars aligned and I actually could have attempted it! They will do the Festive 500, but I’m not sure I can do that again. Too much riding around in the dark by myself — blah. Not festive.

I was looking for Consularrider and your silver R3 all day. At the last minute I was a lazy brain and just took the easy route to Purcellville and rode around there for a bit. I ran out of road at the 50 mile mark:
nice scenery
I used gears today

Participantdcv, there’s something wrong with the bike in your photos. The pedals don’t move when the wheel does…

ParticipantDamnit! I forgot that was this weekend.

Uh oh. I’ve got a motorcycle sitting out back, and, well it’s mostly sat out back. Fun to take out from time to time. But I’d never really looked at it as another bike. Might be time to sell . . .
