ParticipantAnyone else going to Rough Roubaix in Harrisonburg next weekend? I’m doing the short course.

This will be WAY easier than Monster Cross. Mostly because it will NOT rain (power of positive thinking!) and it is not in February. That, and there are hills. Which means you can coast on the downhills. (I have a much harder time on flat courses than I do with big elevation rides.)
Just sign up. It will be fun.
I think it will be easier than Monster in that it is in July, and I’ll be in much better shape in July than I ever could be in February. I also deal with heat better than cold (and summer out there isn’t the same as summer here anyway). There will be a lot of elevation though, and I am a bit wimpy on unfamiliar downhills.
Haven’t yet signed up, but I’m trying to convince a friend to, and if he does, I’ll have to. It also helps that he’s younger and fitter than I and he only wants to do the 52-mile route, which gives me the perfect excuse to not ride 70+ miles.

hmmm… I will keep this in mind as a possibility. I would like to try something like this this year. I was (trepidatiously) thinking about Hilly Billy Roubaix. But… I strained my back on the first fricking day of spring (!) 😡 and am not yet able to do long or hard efforts without irritating it. I don’t want to take chances with the back, trying to do too much too soon. This looks like 3 weeks later so might be a better option in terms of being able to train for it so as to not die before the finish line.
If I were to do it, I would probably go up the night before.
I booked a room at Nelson Rocks which you’re welcome to share. It’s cheap, has plumbing and air conditioning.

ParticipantI’ve been signed up on this one for ages, although one reason is that you can get refunds easily thru April 30 (guess I need to decide soon…). If I’m in town I’ll be doing it.

Yeah – my thing with this type of event is that I’m not really fast enough to be competitive as a racer – so I tend to make it more of a personal challenge. Its why I rode HBR and MC both FG. No chance I’d be competitive against the SS riders, but it makes finishing a tough/technical course a bit more rewarding having spent the entire time spinning my legs.
Sturmey Archer 3-speed FG!
http://www.sturmey-archer.com/en/products/detail/s3x-silverI know what you mean though, most bike events I am just happy to finish mid-pack with something left in the tank. I’ll be on gears if I do this race.
I was thinking of trying HBR on a MTB maybe if I go this year though. The only section I walked last year was a rocky downhill, after a slight unintentional dismount near the top of it. (I also failed to adjust my brake pad properly after all the early section wear and tear – once I fixed that I was fine again).

I’ve heard this thing isn’t that great. One of its flaws is that the chain has to be tensioned with slack in it to allow the hub gears to shift, and that is a weird and disconcerting feeling for fixed. @Dirt had one for a while; he can tell you about it.

That would be great. I have nothing against camping for the purpose of wanting to go camping, but not so much for the purpose of being really well rested prior to a long hard day physically and mentally torturing myself. I’ll pm you with my email.
I’ve aspirationally (and to force myself to actually try to train) registered for the epic route though like vvill I note that I can still change my mind (and I emailed the promoter to see what the policy is for switching route choices closer to the race date).

ParticipantI am reviving this thread; not sure who all is going, but I’m driving and can take one person/bike if you want to do it in a day — i.e. driving out early, and back after the race.

Just do it! It will be fun.
I finally bought some gravel specific tires for my “do everything bike” and have been having a blast breaking them in (700×40’s roll SO much faster than 2.4″ knobbies!). Needless to say, I am pretty excited to actually “race” them in a couple of weeks! Although, I am a bit nervous about the elevation. It has been a while since I have done 50 miles with over 5,000 feet of climbing. But I have been assured that there will be beer waiting for me at this finish. #willclimbforbeer 😎

ParticipantPretty happy I’ll be out of town so I don’t have to make a decision on this.

GuestI’ll be there. Doing the long race and should be one of the last ones finishing. Someone be sure to save me some beer, please.

ParticipantHey, something has come up and I won’t be able to do this after all. Too bad! — But if anyone wants to pay the $10 transfer, you’re welcome to my registration [for free]. First-come, first-serve. Hopefully I’ll find another gravel race to give this crazy new fad a try later in the year
Edit: registration has been transferred.
