I’m probably the only person in America who is fatter as a cyclist than I was as a motorist. I absolutely buy more food from more trips to the grocery store, stop for more cups of coffee ( and eat more gigantic slices of pumpkin pie no thanks to Zeds Coffee shop ) and eat lunch out at restaurants. Biking is enabling behavior because it is so trivial to stop without circling the block for parking or hiking from the bowels of a parking garage a quarter mile away. It always cracked me up when any politician of the conservative stripe warbled long and hard about supporting small businesses while in the next breath scoffed at spending a dime on bike lanes and livable cities. As a small business owner I know that six lane suburban drags lined with strip malls are not the most effective way to get me as a customer.

My consumer spending in general has definitely increased since I started cycling full-time.

Well, there’s me, but I’m pretty sure the causation is the other way around in my case. Every birthday past 40 = 5 more pounds. Every 5 more pounds = 10 more miles per week on the bike. 😮

(Every 10 more miles on the bike = $100 spent on comfy shorts or warm socks or reflective doodads or something to make the miles safer or more comfortable. So biking as economic stimulus still applies.)

You mean once you hit 40, right? That’s a few years away for you yet

Which you can tell by… ???

    My youthful sentence structure?

My definitively 30-something use of smileys?:p;):D

(boring but likely answer) You’ve confused me with an actual 30- or 20- something forum member who’s actually made it to a happy hour or other meetup?

(less likely but both more scary and more interesting) You have some kind of reverse web-cam thingy that lets you spy on the rest of us through the intertubes and you’re actually watching me as I type this?
