Maybe one of those Go Pro cameras might have helped with identification? But maybe they don’t work so well in the dark.

I actually own one. They bring the suck in the dark. I run with a Dinotte on my helmet for light, and the only way I could see the GoPro being effective is being in the same lighted are, ie: also attached to the helmet. I’m not sure my neck is strong enough for all that :)

Any luck on tracking down your MacBook? Really surprising if they haven’t tried to get on the internet by now. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Nothing. Guess at this point is that it’ll pop up with the new owner once it’s sold. I’m patient. Probably no internet at the crack house :)

You may wish to check area pawn shops; they may have been looking for quick cash.

According to MPD anything pawned at a pawn shop by law has to be entered into a database within 48 hours that police have access to and any item has to be held for two weeks also.. Since I have the serial and description it will generate a cross match automatically.

I actually just realized why it hasn’t popped up. I had run the battery about stone dead, and there was no power adapter with the laptop. It was an “ah ha” moment sitting here at my desk (Yes, I’m at work at 5am) when I looked over and saw the mag connector.

I’ve already bought a new machine, and a new frame for the bike. It’s just the principle of the thing now.

I’m still hoping the police catch these guys because they are likely to commit more violent crimes in the future. Two less thugs out on the street will make life a little better for the rest of us.

Oh, I’m with you on this. And I’ve got my internal security folks pressuring MPD. They tend to get results :p

The thugs may have thought it was broken when they tried to turn it on and then threw it away.

Unfortunately, I think it’s a fair bet they will try again presuming they are area residents.

I’ve been out of town, but saw this thread linked on The Wash Cycle before I saw it here. My first thought was, “Oh, crap, that was probably CCrew”. Glad to hear it wasn’t any worse.

Laptop was recovered at 8:30 yesterday evening from someone in McLean. Still trying to get details as to what/where/how/what PD. My guys tell me that it came online at a Starbucks and they nailed it down within minutes. I’m out of the office today so haven’t gotten the full scoop

    Here’s what I know:
It came online last night at 8:32 off a Starbucks access point in McClean Virginia. Which one I don’t know. Both Computrace and one of my Unix admins nailed it at the same time. It was wiped by my folks and Computrace had already notified the PD. They guy that had it wasn’t one of the perps. Wrong race. Supposedly it was bought off the street, and was on CL Sunday for $800. Guy was held and the laptop recovered. It’s now in police custody as evidence. I hear he had more than one.

I suspect that he’s either fencing them and flipping them or he legit bought it off the street. But to flip it for $800 it’s about half what it was worth. Where it goes from here I don’t know. I’ll find out more when I’m in the office tomorrow. I do know I owe my guy a case Sierra Nevada for his troubles.

Wowsy! I can’t believe the police got there in time to nab him; I would have thought he’d realize something was up as soon as the drive got cleaned and leave the scene. Also, how did the PD know it was him? There must have been a number of folks hanging out with laptops.

So glad it was recovered. If he was a perp, hope he has learned his lesson.
