Alexandria’s government webpage underwent a redesign. In addition, it looks like some new content was added to the LocalMotion site.

Namely, the “Glebe Road Bicycle Lanes” and “Kenwood Avenue Bicycle Lanes” projects caught my eye. They do not link to anything, but thinking speculatively, I presume Kenwood bike lanes would run from King all the way up to either Fern or Crestwood. They would almost certainly connect to the King Street facility after the Complete Streets program is enacted on King.
The Glebe Road bike lanes hold more possibilities, because you could be talking about from Valley to Commonwealth, Commonwealth to Potomac Yard, or both, or a fraction of any of those. Would be a nice alternative to the FMR trail.
Thanks for the link. I’m excited for a couple of the projects listed.
I like what they’re planning for Taney Ave because it already has the room for bike lanes. It will connect Howard St to Pegram St with bike lanes which helps with connecting to the Holmes Run Trail.
My prediction for the Glebe Road bicycle lanes is that they will be installed between US-1 and Mount Vernon Ave because that stretch is currently one lane each way with enough space to put bike lanes. Since there is an off-street paved trail between Potomac Ave and US-1, this would essentially connect the Potomac Yard Trail and Commonwealth Ave bike lanes and provide a great east-west route in northern Alexandria. That said, bike lanes between Mount Vernon Ave and Valley Dr would also be great but would require a road diet (no complaints here).
For the Kenwood bike lanes, I would expect them to be installed between King St and Valley Dr which has sharrows. This would provide a potentially less-strenuous way (well, the hills are less steep) to access Shirlington, 4MR, and W&OD.

ParticipantThe Alexandria City Council approved the Pedestrian and Bicycle Chapter of the Transportation Master Plan today. There will be another vote in May by the City Council to pass an ordnance to amend the Transportation Master Plan to include the Pedestrian and Bicycle Capter.
This gives the city a plan to work from. Now comes the hard part – finding funding and support for each project and initiative. There still remains opposition in the city to any change that impacts vehicular traffic. If you live, work or visit in Alexandria, you should stay alert to projects and make sure your opinion is heard.
