I think you’re thinking about Bike DC, and not the Air Force Cycling Classic. As to the mess around Iwo Jima last year, that was primarily caused by an unplanned closure of half the road. It’s always a little tight around there, but had worked in years past. That said, there were lots of lessons learned. More info soon.

There appears to be enough people in the know on this site, so does anyone know the route for the ride this year? Last year’s route was awful. It had that crazy hair-pin turn in Rosslyn that had a number of pile ups and delays.

I’m curious too, although I thought the route was fun. It’s always going to be tough with such a crowd and such a variety of riders.

Btw, you mean the hairpin at Wilson Boulevard + N Kent St right? Someone dropped a water bottle and it rolled down in front of my front tire on my first turn there. It was easy enough to avoid since I started back in the pack and everyone was still straddling their bikes, but the guy behind me didn’t see me brake and took a very light “couldn’t unclip in time” tumble. :(

Based on my experience last year, I’d say the best way to enjoy BikeDC is to start at the front of the pack. I was part of the initial wave of riders out of the gate and things were starting to get jammed up at Iwo Jima as I was on my way back from the AF memorial, meaning I got to ride past the carnage but not be stuck in it….it was kinda like a reverse commute, actually.

There is a contact email on their website at http://cyclingclassic.org/

I though the hairpin right turn from the Route 110 exit onto Washington Blvd (for the riders coming down the hill from the AF Memorial) was more of a problem. Because we were going “the wrong way” based on normal traffic flow, there was a lot of debris on the inside of the turn. Probably the organizers should sweep that section to improve the ridability.
