When I left the house on Thursday, it was 39 degrees. When I arrived home on Friday, it was 80 degrees. I’m assuming all of spring occurred during that interval, and that we are now into summer.

If you think 80 is summer, you’ve suppressed your memories of summer. :)

To paraphrase game of thrones: hazy, hot, and humid is coming…

There’s a chance of frost in outer suburbs on Tue. and Wed. night, with temperatures in the low 30s. Probably a little colder in those outer suburbs. We’re still not quite at the stage of constant summer heat, although it’s actually nice to have several days in the 70s and 80s, then a breather with a day in the 50s. It will rain on Tuesday though.

Believe me, I’ve spent enough time bicycling straight up Wisconsin Avenue out of Georgetown in 100°+ weather that I only wish I could suppress my memories of summer. But I’d still like at least a few weeks in the 50s, 60s, and 70s!

Couldn’t make it due to publication schedule – can we try again soon?

Well .. sure! This week isn’t terribly warm but next week looks promising. Thursdays don’t work for me. What about next Wednesday or Friday? Obviously it will be weather dependent and we’ll make a final determination next week.

I like either one, but Fridays always feel best for getting out of the office. Weather rules though. Glad you had a good inaugural ride/picnic (“ridenic?).

So far the extended forecast for Wednesday next week looks good, Friday’s not out yet.

I’m glad that the Arctic weather has departed. But the rising pollen counts are doing a number on me. Plus the swarms of gnats are out again. Burning eyes from pollen, and gnats flying into my mouth and eyes.

I am sorely tempted to break out the aero helmet and use that, even on CaBi. Yes, it’s ridiculous to wear an aero helmet on a CaBi bike, but it has a full face shield. It will keep most of the gnats out of my face. I don’t think it will do much with the pollen, but maybe it will keep some of it from blowing into my eyes so forcefully as I ride.

Last year the pollen got to me enough that I used ski goggles even on hot days. Looked stupid but it definitely helped.

I might have to try that too. I have swim goggles but those would fog up too quickly. I did give in and take a Claritin-D last night. I try to hold off on that as long as possible each spring, because I don’t like the side effects (sluggishness, light-headedness, upset stomach if I don’t remember to eat something with the Claritin-D, dry mouth-which can lead to cavities). But the pollen is forcing my hand now. After I take Claritin-D for a few days, I’m usually fine for the rest of the spring and summer (and I don’t get affected by the grass pollen in the late summer/fall).

I saw a guy riding China pollution mask-style like this this AM. I assume it was for pollen…

Having no problems at all w/ seasonal allergies personally, I can’t relate, but my wife, who does suffer, probably could.

I think I saw the same guy, or at least someone doing the exact same thing on Friday. Only problem is the inside of those masks gets really warm–it wouldn’t be comfortable on a hot day. I seriously considered it for a minute though. My allergies are about to kill me. I can’t stop coughing.

I consider the gnats to be my afternoon snack…with allergies making it so I can’t breathe well through my nose, I eat a ton of them while biking. Since I like to bike in yoga tank tops over the summer (I’m tall, so they’re one of the few things that cover my back fully), I end up having to rinse off in the shower when I get home since my arms and chest are covered in gnats. It’s pretty gross.

Maybe try cheap, light safty glasses instead of hot maskes or ski goggles. At least if you’re worried about your eyes.

Ok, I was really hoping that tomorrow might work out but it doesn’t so …. Friday if there are no T-storms? After that I descend into audit hell for a few weeks.
