On a different topic: The traffic cones at the Jefferson are a disaster, particularly the ones at the easternmost entrance.

Just sent this email to the Acting Superintendent

“Can you take a look at the NPS use of traffic cones at the two entrances to the Jefferson Memorial? I commute by bicycle through there every day and find the cones often present a safety hazard. Of particular note are the cones that often block an ADA sidewalk ramp at the crosswalk on the river side entrance. Today, the other entrance was completely blocked with about 10-12 cones that had been evenly spaced so as to present a significant safety hazard for cyclists heading off the sidewalk and into the roadway heading towards the bridge.

Not only do these cones serve little function, they present a haphazard visual appearance to the grandeur of the memorial.”

There is no such thing as a free lunch… or parkway. Politicians get elected by offering free lunches to voters. If we just keep taxes low, miraculous things will happen. (I don’t think they meant that bridges will fall down.) Unfortunately the real world is governed by things like physics and math and such. There really aren’t very many alternatives to raising the damned gas tax and indexing it to inflation. Then require that these funds go into a fund for infrastructure repair and maintenance not military spending or entitlements. Raise income taxes on high income people. To do these things will require bipartisan leadership which is about as rare as a free lunch these days.
