    That’s weird.

Though there’s also an elephant inside the Museum of Natural History.

I’m not bleeding heart by any means, but this just seems incredibly crule. An animal like that should be in a pen with some room to move around… you know like maybe… a zoo”?

Didn’t the zoo’s meet its end during the great zoo animal die-off?

I wasn’t aware of a die off. There were lots of animals at the zoo when I was there in October.

Looked to me like a promotional gimmick for some event or other at the Newseum. Hopefully the giraffe has a nice home somewhere with lots of room to roam when he (or she) isn’t out working on publicity tours.

An unusual number of animals died at the zoo all at once a few years ago. Not all of them though.

    That’s a little creepy.

No, the Zoo’s giraffes were moved to other zoos to make way for the expansion of the Asian elephant habitat. The new Elephant Trails will make the National Zoo one of the few places in the country that can house a multi-generational herd of Asian elephants, including full grown bulls.

well, I (and the giraffes) am happy to be corrected.

It’s probably part of the annual Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus in D.C. They are having elephants march along Capitol Hill and over to Gallery Place today at 8 pm. I’m no fan of PETA either, but I don’t like the idea of animal circuses. Seems very 19th century to me, and many of the circuses have horrendous animal-keeping practices. I’d rather see open-air parks like some cities have built in recent years, where it’s more like a safari than the traditional concrete, steel and glass zoos of old.
