I have family in Honolulu so I’ve spent a lot of time there over the years. Haven’t done much biking, but I’m happy to recommend other stuff to do if you’re interested!

I do see a ton of bikes on the highway that goes past Hanauma bay – it’s a beautiful road (and a big hill), but the drivers are too busy looking around for me to trust them there I also see a lot of bikes around the Kailua/Lanaikai area, and along the beaches on the north shore.

There, ridewithgps and other websites which generated questions someone with first hand experience may be able to answer such as how truely rideable is the dirt road/trail around Kaena Point on a roadbike?

I wouldn’t do it. I did it two years ago on a rented fatbike and there were a few challenging spots even on 4″ tires. Would MAYBE consider a crossbike, knowing I’d have to walk in quite a few spots. It’s an amazing ride.

A lot of it’s like this – it COULD be done on skinny tires, but my co-worker (in the photos) and I definitely appreciated the extra cushioning.

I didn’t get any pics of the really nasty spots, at least none that I can find.

The scenery is just incredible.
