Great story. We should remember that considerate motorist and strive to have them remember considerate cyclists.

Glad you finally realized what all the honking was about!

That reminds me of a time a few years ago when I was working in Bethesda. I was beginning the ride home, but it had not been a great ride in so I wasn’t excited about it. A car to my right honks at me while I’m waiting to turn right and as I’m about to raise my finger at the person I look over and it’s my boss, waving a big hello. Whew! Glad my brain engaged faster than my anger reflex. That was a good lesson.

ive realized that intermittent honks arent usually angry people, the ones where theyre being held down are angry honks…

L Street, two lanes narrowing to one – I look over to the left for a gap, and the car alongside my bike slows down and gives me lots of space. At the next light, I give the driver a thumbs-up, and he gives me one in return. Small gesture, big benefits!

I had a driver pull up beside me on my left in a wide lane last night (northbound 2nd street NE at Mass Ave) when I was stopped at the light. He rolled down his window to let me know he wanted to take a right on red in front of me. (I think he was concerned I was going to Idaho the red light while he was trying to right turn on red.)

At first I didn’t understand — I thought he was asking if it was legal to go right on red. But then he clarified. I assured him I was staying put — sightlines are nowhere near good enough to Idaho that light anyways.

Of course, I think right turns on red should be illegal in the city anyways (like they are in Montreal), and of course, jumping or Idahoing a red light on a bike after a full stop is illegal here (though not in Idaho!) and I don’t do it very often anyways.

But I did appreciate the warning — it showed a driver who was proactively being careful before making a tricky turn.

It is so easy for us to get focused on the negative interactions. I find myself doing it too. Stuff like this reminds me that there are wonderful people out there and we need to celebrate them EVEN MORE than we kvetch about the schmoizelheads. Thanks y’all! :D
