It depends how they are done. In the DC metro area they are pretty bad, so I actually have found that (except in the case of incensed drivers) its safer to take the lane than be in the bike lane with the chances of being doored, right hooked, ect…

Eh, not much new. Some Boro in England with a population of 85,000, and 30 miles from central London did not see much usage of its bike lanes? Compared to so many cities that have? And restrictions on driving and parking will encourage biking? Great, I can’t wait to tell that to the Alexandria City Council.

And sharrows? I was nearly hit in one a couple of weeks ago, as I made a proper vehicular left from Braddock to Beauregard in Alexandria. For all the horror anecdotes about bike lanes, I think there are plenty about sharrows and vehicular riding. Both kinds of riding require due care, and neither is perfectly safe.

I could not read the linked article about Florence, as it was in Spanish.

As a very new trike rider I can tell you that protected bike lanes are a godsend in urban areas because we sit so low to the ground. When on two wheels I’ll ride in the bike lane or in the lane depending on the situation.
