ParticipantSteel would be ok for hail, but I don’t think that’s a good idea for strong winds, tornadoes or lightning.
SPC has already outlined a large area on the east coast that is under a slight risk for severe tomorrow with the bullseye on the mid-atlantic region. The main threats will be from strong straight line winds and isolated tornadoes. Kinda similar to two weeks ago.
STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO INTENSIFY AS THEY DEVELOP EWD THROUGH THE
DESTABILIZING WARM SECTOR. MIXED CONVECTIVE MODES ARE LIKELY
INCLUDING LINES WITH EMBEDDED SUPERCELLS/BOWING SEGMENTS. A FEW
DISCRETE SUPERCELLS MAY ALSO OCCUR IF SUFFICIENT BOUNDARY LAYER
WARMING OCCURS. DAMAGING WIND AND A FEW TORNADOES WILL BE THE
PRIMARY THREATS. THIS REGION WILL CONTINUE TO BE MONITORED FOR A
POSSIBLE MODERATE RISK IF IT BEGINS TO APPEAR THAT MORE INSTABILITY
WILL DEVELOP THAN CURRENTLY ANTICIPATED.PS – for SPC to be this specific about the severe threat a day in advance means it has the potential to be pretty significant.

ParticipantI have an early day tomorrow, in to work by 5am, so riding isn’t really an option (also using it as a clothes-swap day). Hopefully this means I’ll miss any weather-induced traffic delays, since I’ll be heading home a couple hours before rush hour.

ParticipantWE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!!!
Just kidding. Be very careful out there. Keep an eye on the radar and weather conditions before you head out. Think about bail-out points and places that you can get shelter between point A and point B.
Rock on, folks!

ParticipantOK, ugh. I had intended to ride tomorrow. I didn’t ride today because my lazy ass couldn’t engage the brain at zero:dark:30.
Those of you with options other than cycling, are you going to ride tomorrow? Or lay low? I’ve ridden in plenty of rain, but nothing too severe yet, trying to decide what to do.

If my 23 month old daughter can put up with a little bit of rain, I’m sure you can too….

ParticipantSince when is the weather forecast actually been accurate, and why is it always in CAPS? They need to fix that keyboard – caps lock key has been stuck for years!

Oh honey, you don’t want to get into that with me.

yes, I’m more delicate than a 23 month old girl
especially when it comes to “about one trillion watts — one terawatt (1012 W), and the stroke lasts for about 30 to 90 microseconds.” (source: wikipedia article on lightning that I should not have read, because I’m already more scared of lightning than I am of the real Pennywise)

Lucky me, I decided to be lazy and do trivia tomorrow night so I will be taking Metro. You know what, that’s really not lucky because I will probably end up stuck walking down some track due to a Metro breakdown from a slight mist after the rain. On the bright side, I’m thinking of doing the loop on way home to make up for missed time. I’m the crazy one who loves cloudy (but non-rainy) days.

ParticipantWell pewp. I was going to ride tomorrow because I did not ride today because I did that running thing yesterday and ran too hard and wore out mah legs and if I’m gonna pay $100 to run this half marathon thing then I’m gonna be darn sure I’m in runnable condition on race day and also run on sentences.
So maybe I won’t then.

ParticipantRe: the little rain comment. We were in a freak weather event last Saturday while not biking, and I’m glad I was able to jump in a parked car and hunker down. Wind came up pretty much out of nowhere, carrying dirt fully horizontally like a sandblaster, then the rain came in (also horizontally) and brought visibility down to zero. My wife couldn’t carry our youngest against the wind, and I had a tough time of it. If it’s something like that again, I’d want to be inside–at least for me, there are too many stretches where I’d be hard pressed to find adequate shelter from trees falling over, branches flying, etc. (Full disclosure: I wasn’t going to ride tomorrow anyway, for unrelated reasons.)

Yeah, I was on a bike for the WABA Confident City Cycling Evaluation (so I can become an LCI) during that “weather event.” I could barely see anything (and I imagine I wasn’t real visible to others, either) and the gusts made bike handling dicey. Large limbs were falling into the street before us. I was also thinking, “um, isn’t this what the weather is like just before a tornado?” I wouldn’t want to be too far from shelter when something like that blew up. So be careful and pay close attention to the forecast tomorrow, everyone!

ParticipantYup, I was trying not to blow into Four Mile Run during that event of the weather. No fun.

ParticipantJust installed a new rear fender, hopefully that’ll help on the ride tomorrow. CWG’s latest makes it sound like the worst will be in the mid-late afternoon, but that the wind and storms could be tempered if the cold air and rain move in earlier.
And as for NWS broadcasting its forecasts and alerts in all-caps…apparently that was supposed to be on its way out – at least they started considering switching to a dual-case system back in 2010:
