ParticipantThere was a large police and tv station presence at TR island this morning. Some twitter feed suggests it’s related to the missing lady. Hope for the best.

ParticipantThis is just awful to read and so saddening. I am sure many of us were on the MVT that day and this weekend and would have certainly helped with the search if we had known. I hope she is OK and that the police presence at TR island is good news!

ParticipantI took Friday off so I don’t think I can be of much help. But I will keep my eyes peeled on the way home to the side and see if I see anything.

ParticipantMore info from WJLA: http://www.wjla.com/articles/2013/05/victoria-kong-reported-missing-after-arriving-at-reagan-national-airport–88380.html
Her family members searched the MVT over the weekend and talked to taxi drivers, airport employees and runners and cyclists on the trail. The grandmother is reportedly showing early signs of dementia, which may explain her actions.
The Park Police, MWAA personnel and two volunteer search groups are also looking for her.

ParticipantOn Saturday, Blacknell and I saw three bike mounted airport police offices riding along Gravelly Point. At one point they stopped and looked over the inlet by the trail that runs from the river into Roaches Run by the boat ramp.
Perhaps connected with this?

ParticipantSounds like really bad news is about to get announced. Reportedly there’s a body in the water near Gravelly Point.

ParticipantNo identification of the body but it is a woman, and the investigation is now being called a death investigation, not a missing person search.
I don’t know if the trail was crowded on Friday evening. Even if it was, most people probably would have thought nothing was wrong. Many people walk along the trails for exercise so it wouldn’t have been unusual to see her there.
I didn’t ride there this weekend, but I was riding on Potomac Ave. in Arlington and Alexandria yesterday. I saw a helicopter passing by overhead, probably involved with the search, though I didn’t realize it at the time.

ParticipantEvidently it wasn’t in the water. I feel like I would have seen someone 30 feet off the path at Gravely Point, but didn’t see a thing this morning aside from the usual folks on the trail and some guys from the Navy running the logged distances they sometimes do down there.

ParticipantUgh….so tragic…an update seems to confirm the worst.

ParticipantOne report said it was in a wooded area. While most of that space is open, there is a small patch of trees near the boat ramp. If she were in there, 30 ft. off the trail, I don’t know if anyone would have spotted her, especially if she went there at night.
And the view from the trail: http://goo.gl/maps/udsQf
You can’t see 5 ft. into the trees, let alone 30 ft., if that’s the location.
If this is indeed the grandmother, it seems like everything went wrong when the wheelchair assistant failed to meet her at the airport. We don’t know all the facts but the woman wasn’t supposed to be walking around by herself. The family members were waiting for her at the baggage claim.
EDIT: Apparently it was the grandmother.

ParticipantThis is a heartbreaking story. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. I’m so sorry there wasn’t a better ending.

I think that was the location because all of the news cameras were on that median nearby last night. One had a camera that was directly pointing at that little group of thick trees and brush between boat ramp/airport/path. Yah, we would have had zero chance seeing her in there. I would guess one of those guys fishing there is who found her.

ParticipantI think it was the MWAA search team that found her. Park Police and two volunteer search teams were also looking for her over the weekend.
The canine units seemed to have been inaccurate. An earlier report said that the dogs detected her scent at Roosevelt Island. But that’s two miles past Gravelly Point. It’s unlikely that she walked all the way up there and doubled back, after already walking from the airport to Gravelly Point.
To be fair to the wheelchair attendant, someone pointed out that a security video shows that the attendant was waiting at the gate for her, with a sign reading her name. Ms. Kong walked past the attendant, whether from an oversight or because of mental confusion (short-term memory loss or dementia). But there is some confusion about whether the airline should have been more vigilant about assisting her and ensuring that she was accompanied at the airport. At a stopover en route, American Airlines did provide an assistant who helped her navigate through that airport. (I think it was Miami.)
While I did not know the family personally, I find it frustrating because I could have easily decided, on a whim, to head over to the trail for a casual bike ride that day. Of course, I didn’t know what was happening that day. But it’s hard not to think that maybe deciding to head to one trail instead of another, there would have been an opportunity to prevent this tragedy. It would not have taken much effort on my part, just doing what I normally do: riding along the MVT. It’s hard to say if I would have noticed anything unusual about a person walking on the trail. But it was getting chilly that evening, so it might have struck me as odd that an elderly woman was walking in the windy conditions without a jacket. But who can say?
Bike traffic is usually light on the MVT on Friday evenings. The cooler weather probably deterred more of the casual cyclists from riding that day too. It’s also unfortunate that it was so cold on a night in May in Arlington. In comparison, the predicted overnight low this coming Friday is in the mid 60s. Just a lot of little things that combined to make everything go so wrong. And right before Mother’s Day too.

ParticipantI could be mistaken, but there did not seem to be media coverage of this until Sunday or Monday. I certainly would have helped to look for her on Friday if I had heard, having had relatives with dementia. Very sad.
