Many thanks to dcv’s family and Rod Smith for allowing me to tag along with them on the 50 States ride. dcv was an awesome navigator; all we had to do was follow him. dcv won’t brag but his 12 year old (!) son completed the ride with nary a complaint or bead of sweat in evidence. Whippersnappers, get off my lawn!

Rod’s bike rattles safely scared all the squirrels away but was defenseless against evil plastic bags.

Thanks Kathy for riding with us, had a great time with you and Rod. After the ride my son reminded me he’s actually 13, I’m the best dad ever. Not!
I’m a dummy, you’re better at guessing his age than I am.

It was great to see so many Forum members out there on Saturday. I ended up skipping the descent to Arizona and the climb back up Garfield and University Terrace. For some unkown reason my rear shifting just stopped at the AU rest stop. I also skipped the Mellow Mushroom after ride party since I was trying to get home before the rain. No such luck, it hit as I was passing the Kennedy Center. I took the long way around the Arlington loop to avoid the Rosslyn climb and ended the day with 90 miles. Add yesterday’s Back Roads Century and I did get my 300 km weekend in. I’m pooped.

Lots of fun. I rode with many forum friends. Except for one sub 3 minute mile in SE that must have been all downhill, my fastest splits were chasing the Ngs from Capitol Hill to Hains Point. (I made a Strava segment of that part :p). I tried hard to stay with DCV and family because I’ve been on a few rides with Vince and I know his wheel is a good one to follow. I think he made two wrong turns, which I’m sure is fewer than the vast majority of riders made. Unfortunately, both times were among the rare moments I was ahead of him. When I realized I’d dropped the guy I was following, I back-tracked and dithered, but both times managed to get back on, the second time with KLizotte’s help.

Before Vince caught a flat in SE, we were in a group that included PeteD (who we rode with from the start) and consularrider, but they didn’t realize there was a mechanical and kept going. Luckily the marshall that had a floor pump did notice and turned around to help. Of course we had the ability to inflate bicycle tires, but not as good as he did. :)

So we lost Pete and Chris, but as the repair was completed, Klizotte found us, and we managed to stay together most of the rest of the way. I got dropped when a baggie got caught up in my derailleur, and we lost Kathy when she got wedged between two Metro buses (ouch), but we both managed to get back on.

Justin Antos who we saw pulling into rest stops as we were leaving and where the course comes back to itself at Pennsylvania and 38th SE caught us at the AU rest stop and dropped us on University Terrace. He would have passed us sooner but after looking at his GPS track I see he either got horribly lost or decided to add some extra miles to the ride. I’m pretty sure it was the latter. :)

I just finished my video for this ride! I figure it should be on this thread, so here it is:

The video parts are all in chronological order, even if some of the streets aren’t exactly in order (note where Florida is). I used the best footage I had of each street. Also, I was tired when riding on Utah Ave and almost completely missed getting any footage on it.

Hopefully Youtube will let me keep this video up. I got a copyright notice (which I have disputed) for having “The Stars and Stripes Forever” performed by the U.S. Marine Corps Band, even though it is in the public domain and freely available for download and use from the USMB website.

Some of us got a good drenching the last seven miles of the ride as well as heading home. 😡

It started to rain after I had already made it safely inside the Mellow Mushroom. I did enjoy the rainy ride home, though :)
