Great! Do you think leaving at six will give us plenty of time to sign in and be ready to roll at eight? I think so. Theres a little park there in front of New Deal Cafe, if I recall. PM your phone number in case we have trouble finding each other or running late.

    Hi Rod!

PM sent…I think! Let me know if there is a problem and I’ll resend.

    Thanks again!

Hey all! Fresh from the WABA volunteer night, and while I won’t give out the cue sheet (promised!), I can say that I’ve been told its mostly the same as last year. There have been a few tweaks to account for construction (as usual).

I’m sure all of you have been doing so already, but for the love of God start hydrating now, and make sure you bring extra water! Outside the pit stops there are few opportunities to refill bottles in the city.

Needless to say I plan on doing the full 50 because why not? 😎 I’ve come to accept 90-100 degree heat has default riding around here in the summer. Besides, as is custom, I must wear my MSU jersey barreling down Michigan Ave, and that’s not until the 3rd quarter of the ride anyway. At that might I may as well stick it out.

That said, is anyone from our lot ride marshaling this year? Last year I glommed onto Boomer’s group and had a great time, but with him gone I’m looking for a new crew…

WABA suggests taking a U lock if staying for Mellow Mushroom. I realize I have never locked my bike up for an extended period in the District other than in my building – I guess in Adams Morgan a cable lock will not be sufficient? I keep my U lock at work, so would love to know before I head home tonight (I do not want to stop by Capitol Riverfront on the way to Adams Morgan tomorrow)

If you bring a U lock, lock it to a fence near the start and get it on the way to the Mushroom. That way you won’t have to carry it during the ride. I think I used a small cable lock last year.

You can drop off your lock with your name on it at the start and WABA will have it in a box at the finish. I can’t make any promises, but I think that the bike theft risk is lower because there are a whole load of bikes parked together and there are bike people around who would notice someone cutting a cable lock.

I will miss following Boomer too. I will be riding with some friends, so you are welcome to join. I’ll be wearing the same yellow and brown Dogfish Head jersey as last year.

Yes, U lock or better to lock up on the street in Adams Morgan.

Interesting cartoon! It makes me wonder if the blacksmiths of colonial times had the technical skill and tools to build bicycle frames. I realize that a bellows and a coal fire is a long, long way from a welding rig…but I still wonder…

I’d like to thank Rod Smith for meeting me in Greenbelt yesterday and leading me to Walter Pierce Park. I didn’t realize that Rod had bicycled several miles from his home to meet me, then bring me into DC, and then do the 50 States ride. Thanks, Rod!

I wasn’t able to complete the ride yesterday. I think the main problem for me was lack of training. My short daily bicycle commutes and 3-4 mile trips to the grocery store were not enough; I need to complete longer rides. Also my pre-ride nutrition in the days before the ride wasn’t real great. Then I lost my cue sheets somewhere after pit stop #2. I tried tagging along with several groups but all those riders were much fitter, especially on hills, and I lost them. I noticed at least 3 folks had flats. I will train more. There is always next year.

The ride yesterday was, well, toasty. I switched from the map mode to the Garmin dashboard and it showed 110F. Because I’ve not done much in distance this summer, I was marshaling the 13 colonies. That turned out to be a particularly good decision.

@BobCochran, you get an A for effort and also for honesty! Sounds like you’re not yet used to long overheated rides in unfamiliar terrain. No worries, there’s always next year. I flatted during 50 states when I tried it three years ago, and then I got totally lost running alongside my bike trying to find the route (and someone carrying a pump). What a relief when I finally came upon the other riders and a guardian angel (aka ride marshal) who took me under his wing. Fifty States is a fascinating ride — I hope we can both do it next year!

@wheels&wings, Thank you! As you say, there is always next year.
