Wow. Could you tell where it was coming from?

This is likely a hazmat situation. If you see something like this, call the fire department.

Someone should toss a match in and see if it explodes.

When I rolled up somebody was already on the phone reporting it. Somewhere upstream of the Shirlington Rd bridge is all I could tell.

The Dept. of Environmental Services is on their way to check this out.

They’ve been doing a lot of work in the sewage lines further west on Four Mile Run. I’ve smelled a bit of chemicals here and there as I’ve ridden by. I’m guessing something went amiss with that project.

    Cool.

Looks like somebody dumped soap, or it leaked. Maybe a car wash?

It reminded me of pranks played on Showalter Fountain at Indiana University.

This happens to me every time I drink too much milk in the morning

I meant to add that maybe this was a late attempt to clean up the petroleum spill of a couple months ago in the exact same spot. Not a good way to go!

This same sort of foam was all over the Potomac from Fletcher’s Cove on down stream. Blobs were not as big, but we all thought it was pieces of styrofoam or plastic bottles of some sort until you got close to it and could see it was just fluff. We see it on occasion, but usually not in that large amounts.

has anyone seen any result of the investigation?
the last i saw was on 21 september on arlnow.com:

“County staff continue to investigate the issue and are trying to determine the source of the foam,” Harn told ARLnow.com. “However, the discharge that caused the foam is no longer occurring and no source has yet been identified.”
