ParticipantJust a shout out of thanks to those who post the early morning or weekend trail or road condition reports. They’re much appreciated! (especially those for FMR/MVT/14th )

ParticipantThe trails of the Arlington loop were basically clear this morning with ice still on the bridges and overpasses. On the W&OD heading in from Falls Church, the stretch from Great Falls St to Bandymore Castle just past EFC Metro had lots of ice issues. On the Custis, the stretch between the Lee Highway overpasses (Milepost 2.5 to 3.5) had lots of ice issues.

ParticipantCCT in Bethesda was about 50% like pictured. South of the tunnel in DC it was melted and wet. ALL bridges were snow and ice covered.

Which bridge, the George Maosn Memorial Bridge (14th street) or Memorial, do more people use in the mornings? Although I normally take the Memorial Brdige, in the mornings, I can try and remember to take the George Mason Memorial Bridge if more people use it.

I’ve never used studded tires before. Were your’s sufficient for those conditions. I find it hard to believe those little metal nubbies would be enough. Just curious.

ParticipantI don’t know if anyone here knows the answer to that, but I support your taking the bridge that works best for you (unless you’re craving some variety). We can get a general idea of GM/14th conditions from what’s happening on other bridges. Nice of you to consider that, though!

ParticipantHats , er helmets off to the serious winter warriors and their studded tires. I actually drove my car yesterday rather than ride. I’m an ice wimp. It occasioned however another one of those queasy ‘driving where I normally ride moments’ of being confounded in the Whole Foods parking lot staring at a sea of parked cars and wondering “wtf have I got myself into?”.

ParticipantI’m trying to decide on doing the school pickup on the bike or in the car. It’s 36F and drizzling – I’m definitely walking the line between “smug-bike-everywhere-guy” and “Someone-is-going-to-call-Child-Protective-Services-guy”.

If you need peer pressure, I’ll be doing the day care pickup by bike this evening…I find that if I ride with enough speed, I create a wind/rain fairing with my body and the baby girl hardly gets wet at all!

ParticipantI’m leaning towards biking. The trailer is fully enclosed, so the kids won’t get wet. And it’s no colder today than other recent days. It would mostly just be me getting wet, and I don’t melt, either.

ParticipantI did take the bike. It was a good decision.

I just rode home from Court House to West Falls Church (Custis to W&OD). It’s a ton better than this morning and most of the stuff that’s still on bridges is slushy. You’d be fine on a mountain bike and okay on a road bike if you don’t mind walking in a couple of areas.
I still think I’ll use the studded ride tomorrow b/c what’s left will freeze tonight.

In the morning, either one works. I usually take Memorial in the morning and the George Mason Memorial in the afternoon/evening.
The one problem, though, is days like today, where Memorial Bridge was fine at 3:00 a.m., but sounds like it was worse about five hours later.
