As usual, great seeing everyone. A little embarrassing on the last stop when I had to clean up Judd’s mess when he knocked over the vase

Participant428 feet into this morning’s ride and one teensy hop off a curb, my carbon fiber fat rim decided it couldn’t support the weight of my love handles anymore and decided to explode. Sounded like a gunshot, with orange “blood” (sealant) splattered everywhere

Oh no! Did the rim fail, or did the tire just blow off? Man, I can only imagine what a fat tire would sound like blowing off the rim! 😮

The rim failed BUT it was warrantied a while back by Nextie when I noticed this one had a little crack in it. I ran it just fine for a while, but with the higher pressure of a recently installed slick tire (~20psi?) vs normal pressure of a normal fat tire (~8psi), the rim gave up. I didn’t crash or get hurt.

Fat Tire Blowoff by ricky d, on FlickrAnd this is why I’m resisting the urge to ride tubeless on my road bike.

I know diddly about tubeless road setups, but I think my setup here is about as far as you can get from it. It’s a 4″ slick tire (which I don’t think was designed to be tubeless), on a 65mm wide carbon rim that I knew already had a crack inside. When I found the crack, I emailed Nextie (the manufacturer), and they sent me a replacement that day. They told me not to use the rim anymore, but it didn’t seem too bad and continued to use this rim/wheel as a backup (with low pressure fat tires) for the next year and a half. A few days ago I mounted slicks on it so that I could ride the bike around the ‘hood a little more since my fat bike was so neglected.
So (unsurprisingly):
Pre-cracked rim + Non-tubeless, higher pressure tire + Stuntz = KABLOOIE!Your road tubeless (properly set up and appropriately designed) should be fine. Go for it!

Actually, the reason I decided not to go road tubeless has nothing to do with your rim cracking and tire exploding. It has to do with the mess associated with tire sealant, which is required if you go tubeless. Eventually, you have to put on new tires and there’s no avoiding the mess of the sealant.
Back in the day when I raced, I used to ride tubulars exclusively. But dealing with gluing tires to rims and having to carry a whole tire as a spare is a PITA. However, nothing rides smoother and softer than a road tubular.

Haha, ok. Well, I try to be careful when swapping out my tubeless tires and usually don’t end up making a mess. I am familiar with tubular setup (doing a few in the 90s), and that is waaaay harder and messy than swapping out tubeless.
