Its taken several weeks of training without a purpose (I knew I was training, but didn’t know for what!) and much deliberating, but I’ve finally chosen that this year’s century attempt will be the Indian Head 100.

I’ll be out of town when the mid-August ones happen, and work commitments will keep me from traveling in September, so this (relatively) local one on labor day sounded like a good compromise. The timing should even allow a bit of recovery before 50 States!

Anyone else considering it for this year? It sounded like folks who did it last year had a good time (if the forum posts are to be believed). If you’ve done it before, do have any advice as to what to train for/expect?

That’s the one. There was a lady with a camera at the top. I tried to put on a smiley face for her but I suspect it came out more as a grimace.

I think that’s where we had our flyby – strava says we were at the rest stop together at mile 64ish. It’s all a blur. I can’t remember if that nasty hill was before this stop or the stop around mile 77. Anyway, this is where you not only caught me but blew me away.

At the end right before we turned onto the rail trail, I saw that INSANE hill ahead and started cursing like a sailor and then almost cried when consularrider turned left (and away from it).

The last time I did this ride two years ago we went up that hill instead of turning onto the rail trail. Oh what a relief when I saw the route marker pointing left.

You know… I think that big hill was approximately where my 2016 mileage “rolled over” to 3,000!

Anyhoo, thank you all for a fun ride! After our initial roll-out and before the 1st pit-stop we seemed to separate into “those with cleats” and “those with human shoes” which meant some fun riding with Korembi and LSP. I fell behind pretty quick after the first stop while fiddling with my new gearing (the new bike is a 2x and Furiosa was a 3x).

My decision to plow on ahead after stop 2 was based partially on my own experience with legs getting cold on long stops, partially on the lack of food at stop 2 sending my system into a “do not miss food again” mindset, and partially on the assurance you all would pass me anyway. ;) I hope it was by no means construed as an antisocial guesture.

I think by the end the new bike and I settled into a rhythm (though we need more adjusting). I had to relearn climbing and gearing, but fortunately this course and the weather was a lot more forgiving than Tour de Fredrick last year. I finished a lot faster and stronger and felt pretty good the next day (albeit sleepy)

    Thanks again for the camaraderie!
