ParticipantCould get up to the high 50s, could rain some, could be some frozen precip after dark. Makes it hard to know what to wear and what bike to bring.

ParticipantOnly appropriate to need Rule 5 on the fifth running of the HP100!

ParticipantIn light of this Bizzaro-forecast of it growing colder as the day wears on, I’m going to err on the side of early, even if it means missing out on afternoon door prizes.
As for the Penguin “kit”, not ready for today, we’ll see about Freezing Saddles. 😎
That said, I have polka-dot penguin socks and colored lights on my frame, so if you see me, say hello!

ParticipantI made it the full 100 miles in what was the most challenging weather I’ve ever ridden in. I ended up changing in and out of clothing four times and constantly was zipping and unzipping.
At one point there was a huge temperature difference on one side of HP than the other. That transitioned into random temperature differences all along the loop. It was like alternating standing in front of an AC and then standing in front of a heater.
The front finally came through and blew the rest stop away. I was literally slowed down to four mph before my bike veered into a parking space. I still had 30 miles to go at this point. 10 laps of soul crushing headwind.

Impressive that you kept going, trees couldn’t even stay up!

Participantthe temperature swings were fun! LOL.. one second, I was thinking “Maybe I should drop my outer shell, it’s kinda warm”, the next second-“Holy hell, must be blowing off of a cold spot on the water”… Repeat 3-4 times every lap….

ParticipantI got an early start and had 32 miles or so in (including riding from home) by the mass start. Consequently I was on the way home when the front came through. On one side of the Potomac it was warm and calm and a man was jogging toward me shirtless, then as I was almost to Virginia the wind picked up and blew me into the railing so that I had to grab it to stay upright. There were suddenly whitecaps on the river and the two cyclists in front of me put their feet down and stopped. I was at about mile 94 at that point and the legs were dead, but I trudged upriver against the headwinds, at times going only 4 or 5 mph. Ended up at 103.5 miles for about 6 hours and 20 minutes of riding. Needed a very hot shower when home to warm up. I think it was fun?

It was fun.
Or it was at least potentially fun. I have promised myself that next year I’m not going to make it a century and I’m going to focus entirely on socializing with all of my bike friends and hanging out at the pit stop most of the day drinking coffee.

ParticipantPictures from Dominion Cycling Photography are up of the Hains Point 100. I managed to avoid being photographed this year, but there are lots of familiar faces.

ParticipantHey that’s the exact moment we rounded the point to face the 21mph headwind that sent everybody else home for the first time
