How do these candidates stand on cycling issues? Glad you asked. I sent the same questionnaire that I used in the Democratic Primary two the two new candidates. In addition I offered the two Democrats an opportunity to update their primary responses if they desired. Their responses:

Reading between the lines, Mike McMenamin’s responses regarding road width and parking are troubling.

We know the effect of road width on driver behavior: the wider the road, the faster people will drive. So width per se is detrimental to bicycle safety, not contributive. Wide roads encourage drivers to speed, thus scaring bicyclists away from using the roads and increasing the danger to pedestrians attempting to cross them.

He sounds overly interested in maintaining or even augmenting existing parking. The reason Arlington is perceived to have a parking shortage is because parking is underpriced, so quantity demanded naturally exceeds the supply. In order to ensure readily available parking in the busiest corridors, you need to price it high enough that many people will choose alternatives. The relationship of parking policy with bicycle safety is simple: bicycle safety varies inversely with the number of parking spaces. Every existing parking space makes bicycling a little bit more dangerous and a less attractive transportation option; every removal of a parking space would help to accomplish the opposite.

    “True champion”?

That’s outrageous! I never even received the questionnaire!!!!!!

Remember, Audrey is an avid cyclists – so she would know about this survey, which has been done every election, posted to facebook, posted to twitter, and posted to local Arlington Blogs.

Another possible reason this may not be her is – really….. HOTMAIL????

Anyway, for the record, before Chris did this survey, I did this survey. And I contacted Audrey via every POC available. And never received a response.

Maybe she just got lost along the way, being inconvenienced by a bike race.

    {Seriously – since this is an non-authenticated email address and is not the email address on her website, I think we can assume this is not her}

So one of the candidates got taken out by the trollheim. Maybe if we take, say, the head of NPS out for a ride on a damp morning we might get somewhere.

I liked Audrey Clement better as a cycling advocate when she was “refused to respond”.

What makes you think she has responded?

But she’s a committed cyclist, has a Ph.D. and an Ivy League education, and is Green. She’s the perfect candidate for Arlington.

I trust Chris when he says he’s verified the response. Why would you trust him on the others and not this one…

I took Bob to be suggesting that her posts weren’t really a response, not that they weren’t from her.

No actually I missed this. So Chris, you have confirmed – (1) she doesnt know how to use email and (2) she uses hotmail?

I would love our Green Party candidate to make a green oath that if she fails to garner 5% of the vote, she will do the green thing – reduce her carbon footprint – and NEVER RUN FOR OFFICE IN ARLINGTON AGAIN (which includes the carbon footprint from all those plastic campaign signs she puts up all over the county – and then fails to take down)

Whenever I get an email from a Hotmail account I assume that someone I was friends with in college had their account hacked.

True story: my neighborhood hosted a candidates forum on Monday. Afterwards, while making small talk, I mentioned to one unnamed-but-principally-a-cyclist candidate that I was surprised that I was nearly #500 at the monolith that morning. The candidate did not know what the monolith was and had never seen it (I described it in detail).

Cafe Sazón is next to the Goodwill visible from where the W&OD crosses Columbia Pike.

Assume you are talking about the Bike-o-Meter. And did the unnamed-but-principally-a-cyclist candidate think the monolith was a good thing?
