I volunteered to be a ride marshall for this year’s 50 States ride. Steve O, HF and I did it last year, and it was one of the toughest metric centuries ever 4 me, largely due to all of the stop and go at busy intersections, not to mention the torrential downpour of rain! That said, it was well worth it, as it took us through many parts of DC that I otherwise would have never known.

It was not “torrential” in the slightest. It was drizzly for most and a modest steady rain for a while. Unpleasant, but “torrential” it was not.

Regardless, no rain this year or Boomer will buy you a beer at the end.

The official call is out for bike marshals:

Ride Marshals for 50 States & 13 Colonies Ride
    Saturday, September 12
Starts and ends in Adams Morgan, DC
We rely on volunteer ride marshals to help guide others throughout the ride, provide directions and encouragement, and most importantly to respond and let WABA staff know if there’s an incident. Marshaling is a lot of fun, and let’s you enjoy the ride experience at no cost. We ask that volunteer ride marshals be current WABA members or be volunteering their way to a membership.
    Be a ride marshal.

Rod Smith and Phil Melton have also volunteered as ride marshalls, FYI, but WABA is calling for more.

It’s a big ride with people all over the city all day. Individual results may vary. Trust me. It was torrential for me and my group right before the Takoma DC pit stop around 1:00-1:30. Like, “couldn’t see” torrential.

Yeah, the rain really picked up in the early afternoon. There was a really nasty crash in Rock Creek Park where a rider slipped and was badly injured. It put a bit of a pale on things thereafter… :(

I rode the 50 States the past seven years, four of them as a marshal. I believe there was at least a little rain on each and every one of those rides.

    Shut up.

Consensus on this thread seems to indicate that SteveO’s definition of “torrential” rain is unique from everyone else’s…as we already know that about his definition of “hill.”

As far as Summer riding is concerned, I decided that getting rained on was better than 95 and humid. (Or at least that’s what I told myself to get through June/July)

The 50 States ride might be the most grueling thing I’ve done. I ran the full Rock N Roll DC Marathon in March, and 50 States was still tougher than that. I’m gladly doing 13 colonies this time!

Are you guys excited for the mania yet?

Last night I participated in the volunteer night at WABA and had the venerable task of making a DDOT bike map with the route from the cue sheets. However it turns out the bike map takes certain… artistic liberties and straight up doesn’t even show some roads, much less label them! Cartological issues aside, this route is going to be as crazy as ever.

Having only done the 50 once, I can’t say whether the route is the same as last year. Certain parts definitely look that way (Hello Hawaii Hill!) but others downtown might be a bit modified.

Anyway, I can’t wait to see you all there! The best part is always the collection of wild stories at the after party… 😎

This’ll be my 2nd attempt at 50 States. The first time I cramped up hard around state 43 or so and Metro’d home.

Correction: Turns out my wife is out of town and can’t watch the kids, so 13 Colonies with 2 passengers on the Bakfiets it is.
