It seems it is about time to register for this – I have never done it (or really much in the way of organized group rides at all, aside from Port City short rides, the Tour de Fat ride, and the FSHH convoy) and I think I would do the 13 colonies.

According to the WABA website, registration will open this afternoon. WABA members will get an email when registration is open.

This’ll be my 2nd attempt at 50 States. The first time I cramped up hard around state 43 or so and Metro’d home.

Registration for WABA members now online. What? You aren’t a WABA member? You should be!

I am registered for the 50 States. I did it back in 2008, and it is definitely a challenge, but one that I think is well worth it. I got to explore sections of the city I had never seen before and really got an appreciation for how beautiful it is in all four quadrants. I don’t know if they’re using the same route, but if they are make sure to keep some gas in your tank for the last 5 miles. They had us go almost all the way to the Potomac and the straight back up near the Cathedral. It was brutal after all those miles. That said, it was great fun and I am looking forward to doing it again. Hopefully I’ll see some of you guys out there, too.

I’ll probably take this year off…had a great time riding the last section with Subby last year, but I’m fairly certain the hours of soaking rain contributed to the nasty flu that I caught shortly after the ride. I’ve ridden it geared and fixed now though, so I’m not sure what to do next. Maybe try a unicycle?

The route varies a bit from year to year but the essential idea of hitting all 8 wards is unchanged. Last year the descent on Arizona Av was extended to MacArthur making for even more climbing. Also, in recent years a Hains Point loop has been added.

They always can use more volunteer bike marshals, a good way to pay it forward.

I’ve been looking forward to this so much I made sure my Office Outlook Calendar had a “registration day” entry! I’m in like flint~

50 States/13 Colonies is one of the most fun, uniquely DC experiences you can have on a bike! But I’m going to warn you, its a “Gateway Drug.”

I did 13 Colonies two years ago and had such a good time! I’d never ridden with others before and it was a rolling conversation! I spend some time riding next to one fellow who was born and raised in the city and pointed out schools he went to, changing neighborhood landmarks and so on. Then I ended up with another group of transplants and got to learn their stories. I had such a blast I didn’t want it to end, so, I decided to make 50 States my goal last year.

So I worked up mileage on my little (and by “little” it really weighed a comparative-ton) 7 speed speed commuter hybrid throughout the summer and managed to complete 50 States despite the rain and hauling a wet bag of dry clothing (for the afterparty!) in decent time. That day I did 72 miles and it was the longest day of riding I’d had.

It was from that experience I’m now about to do my first century this weekend. So If you haven’t signed up yet, I say go for it! Just be careful, it just might lead you places… 😎

This….might need to be a thing. I think maybe someone did 13 Colonies on CaBi, but I don’t know about 50 States.

WABA tweeted that there are now fewer than 100 spots left.

If you miss the registraion, you may still be able to do the ride as a marshal (do I sound like a broken record?).

Alright, you convinced me. I signed up for the 13 Colonies ride. We should get lots of points for the National Bike Challenge that day!
