The Vuelta a Espana begins this Saturday. There will be 21 stages (so two rest days) covering 3,239.9 kilometers or 2,013 miles.

5 flat stages, 13 hill and mountain stages, 1 team time trial, and 2 individual time trial stages.

Among the top contenders will be Nairo Quintana, Chris Froome and Alberto Contador. Froome and Contador both abandoned the Tour de France, but will return for the Vuelta. Have they recovered from their injuries? Is Quintana in top form? The Vuelta will reveal the answers.

Other notable names include Fabian Cancellara, Chris Horner (the defending champion and the oldest winner ever of one of the Grand Tours, at 41), Andrew Talansky (who will ride in a supporting role), Thibaut Pinot (3rd at this year’s Tour de France), Peter Sagan and Bauke Mollema (who wins the title of most distinctive name in the pro peloton, I think). Mark Cavendish is listed but he will not be riding. Cavendish will ride in the one-week Tour of Britain (Sept. 7-14).

Unfortunately, the TV coverage in the U.S. is limited to the Universal Sports channel, which is not available on Comcast and some other systems. The live coverage will also be streamed on the Universal Sports website, but only for cable/satellite subscribers where the channel is included in the line-up.

Well, I certainly enjoyed watching the peloton take a lap up and down the Paseo de la Castellana by the U.S. Embassy on the final day of the Vuelta. Sort of like watching the TdF on the Champs Elysee. Too bad it blocked my route home and forced me to stick around and have some tapas y cerveza. ;) :D

While oh so helpful dickie, that isn’t in the cards for me at the moment. Any other suggestions?

If you spend some time on Google you should be able to find downloadable torrents of each day’s stage. There is a Dutch torrent site (the name escapes me right now) that does an excellent job. While it is not live, it only requires a wee bit of discipline to then watch the stages after dinner with a nice cold cerveza!

Where’s PeteD when we need him? I know he finds good streams all the time, perhaps PM him.

Let’s see, for tapas there is Jaleo in Crystal City, Guarapo in Courthouse, and La Tasca in Clarendon. Or maybe the bocadillos at 100 Montaditos between Rosslyn and Courthouse.

Is the Eurosport live stream available to U.S. residents?

In other pro cycling news, Thomas Voeckler was struck by a car at the Tour du Limousin. He may have broken his collarbone. I don’t think he was planning to race the Vuelta anyway.

The USA Pro Cycling Challenge is also taking place this week. NBCSN is televising it, but only with afternoon broadcasts, and a repeat in the late night/overnight hours. Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen are the announcers.

Not sure. I’ve actually never used the cyclingfans.com feeds, but I’ve seen them linked to many times on US-based forums and discussion groups, which tends to make me think that they do work…

I am happy to learn there are a few people interested in watching the Vuelta a EspaƱa! If you do not mind listening in Spanish, the national radio and TV network of Spain, RTVE, posts the complete coverage each evening, after the stage:

    http://www.rtve.es/deportes/ciclismo/vuelta-espana/

I find their commentary to be many times better than Phil’s and Paul’s, so sometimes I’ve tuned to RTVE to listen to the commentary about the Tour de France. They tend to highlight rider gearing choices and have a more strategy oriented discussion about the race (and I love ‘suitcases of courage’ and ‘taking the race by the horns’, but…).

Have not tried it for the Vuelta, but have also had excellent luck with Belgian TV streaming – RTBF – the Flemish language site.
