With the recent discussion on the alternate trail under the Humpback Bridge, I was intrigued when I saw this sign this morning.

Following the path under the bridge, I found a NPS crew mowing the grass.

Must have been the McCormick’s reaper I was following from Gravelly Point to the 14th St Bridge where it finally pulled off the MVT and into the grass. I wonder how much the NPS is getting for its hay harvest?

I don’t think the Boundary Channel/395 Interchange project will even begin until next year. The plans for that project show the possible new trail extension from the Humpback Bridge to Boundary Channel Drive. Have there been any updates on the project?

ParticipantBeware the Northeast branch of the Anacostia Trail – looks like the trail is very flooded near where it passes under the CSX tracks…

The timeline in Arlington’s latest draft CIP drags the schedule out a bit “due to the actual timeframes required for the technical analysis processes required by the state and federal government” Currently listed milestones: Design FY2015, Notice to Proceed FY2015, Construction completed no later than FY2018
No other updates that I know of. Hope springs eternal. The person who wrote the description in the current draft CIP sounds a lot more certain than I am that the trail will be included “Critical bike and pedestrian connections will be made from Crystal City to the Mount Vernon Trail.” I am still skeptical that the Pentagon will approve or that it can be built without Pentagon approval, but I am hopeful.

On the Holmes Run trail in Alexandria, just west of the Holmes Run crossing that sometimes (like now) is covered by water, there’s a stretch from 395 to the crossing where the embankment is concrete and there are numerous water channels running down in, and most go under the trail in little conduits. One of the covers for a conduit must have been washed away, as there’s now a 6 or 8 inch cut in the pathway perpendicular to the pathway. Drop a wheel in there and you won’t have a great day. Bunny hops are an option…but fixing it is a better option. Who to contact about that, Alex. Parks?
This problem has not been fixed. While I was stopping to take pictures, one cyclist nearly dropped his front wheel into the cut. I seem to recall that there had been a metal plate covering this at one time.

ParticipantThe Georgetown Branch Trail between the trestle bridge and Stewart Ave is in rough shape. Lots of sandy areas to get stuck in and lots of ruts/crevices from recent stormwater runoff that’ll blow a tube.

ParticipantThere are three wood decked bridges on the W&OD between Columbia Pike and Carlin Springs. The western most two of these both have broken and/or loose boards on the decking.
Edit: I have reported the above via email to the parks authority.

I did too, got multiple automated messages that my request had been received. In my message I noted that this was a safety issue that should get immediate attention. As of this morning the request is still open.

On the trip home it appeared the parks authority had replaced the broken board on the deck of the 2nd bridge, but had not yet addressed the board on the westernmost of the three bridges that is splitting. But good for them for responding quickly to begin addressing the problem.

Can you tell the folks that fixed it about the Troll Bridge. There are definitely loose boards…

Six months later and we’re still waiting for the repairs on the southern end where one of the supports was taken out by a car that drove off the GW Parkway. Funny how those cones keep migrating further out from the damaged area.
