Hmmmm, that tree wasn’t there at 8:59am…
I went through at about 8:25 and it was there, with an orange cone on each side as warning.

you didn’t read the fine print? helmets aren’t designed to protect against that sort of injury.
What if the helmet comes with front-mounted laser beams?

ParticipantW&OD around Ashburn has circling police helicopter, sheriff’s deputies walking the trail, sheriffs in golf carts, and a car just passed me with lights flashing.
Oh, and there’s gravel all over the trail in various spots, some of them fairly dangerous. Keep your eyes open and don’t outrun your ability to react.

ParticipantThis morning two of the slab fords on the 4MRT between Glencarlyn and Columbia Pike were flooded with about four inches of water. Friday’s rain carried enough sand, gravel, etc to block the channels under the slabs, so the water backed up and then was running over the pavement. Also, someone has placed large rocks along the downstream edge of the slabs, I assume to keep people back from the edge is they use the fords.

ParticipantAnyone got any intel on the Lake Artemesia/WMATA/CSX underpass?
On Saturday, the Lake Artemesia gate was chained up and locked, and the underpass was a muddy mess. I am assuming that gate was locked due to the mess.

On Friday morning’s BTWD commute, I tried to pass through there (coming from the lake side), and my wheels were completely underwater within 3 seconds
Yesterday, there was a little mud in the tunnel and around it, but it was rideable.

ParticipantOn the Holmes Run trail in Alexandria, just west of the Holmes Run crossing that sometimes (like now) is covered by water, there’s a stretch from 395 to the crossing where the embankment is concrete and there are numerous water channels running down in, and most go under the trail in little conduits. One of the covers for a conduit must have been washed away, as there’s now a 6 or 8 inch cut in the pathway perpendicular to the pathway. Drop a wheel in there and you won’t have a great day. Bunny hops are an option…but fixing it is a better option. Who to contact about that, Alex. Parks?

Was the gate locked though? The gate was chained and had a padlock on Saturday morning.

The Alexandria City Bike Map lists 703.838.4340 as the Parks and Rec number to call to report trail issues. Or online at http://www.AlexandriaVa.gov/ContactUs If you want to send something electronic to an actual person and not a web-bot, you could try Carrie Sanders (Carrie.Sanders –at– alexandriava.gov). She’s the city’s principal bike planner and liaises with BPAC as well. At the very least, she’d forward your report to the right people at P&R if it’s not something she can address directly.

ParticipantNE branch trail was clean and dry this morning. Only a little bit of sand under Alt Route 1.

Nope, not locked. We were able to ride through yesterday.

Do a Call.Click.Connect to Parks and Rec, Alexandria. They are usually pretty responsive to such requests.

ParticipantWith the recent discussion on the alternate trail under the Humpback Bridge, I was intrigued when I saw this sign this morning.

Following the path under the bridge, I found a NPS crew mowing the grass.

A City crew was working on the sand pile that had covered the trail at the eastern end of Holmes Run. I don’t know if they were going to be heading down to deal with other issues on the trail.
