Fast Friendly Guy
ParticipantI’m sharing dasgeh’s thrill from riding a road bike after so many snowy miles on my trustworthy but heavy (Black Battleship: Trek Cross-Rip, fully outfitted with fenders, rack, and trunk bag).
In fact, I started out the day on the Black Battleship, but returned home after class and switched to my road bike for the commute back into work. I was flying with no problems on W&OD and Custis other than some wet pavement near patches of melting ice–and always at least one track through it.

ParticipantThe only bad spot on the W&OD between the Rt 7 bridge and the Custis intersection is in the area of the 6 mile post between Little Falls and Great Falls. There were two significant stretches there this morning that were rutted ice with no single track. Nasty even with studded tires.
n18, thanks for doing some clearing. It is still annoying how so many curb cuts remain block with snow! I shoveled out the Ohio St access from the W&OD Monday while it was still snowing. I went down to do it again after the snow plow came through, but someone else had beaten me to it.

ParticipantAnd my question of who clears the random sections of trails is answered!

ParticipantNext time, can you shovel a better path from the cul de sac on Four Mile Run to the sidewalk up to Ohio Street?

I’ll take your request under advisement. The previous snow fall someone had done that. Maybe the group house, I think they have access to a snow blower.

ParticipantWhy limit this? I think Chris and his staff should go ahead and take care of all of the bike trails in VA, and if they have time, the district.

This was the first time I almost fell this winter (knock on wood). I switched my wheels/tires to the 28s and apparently briefly forgot I wasn’t using studded tires. Luckily I unclipped in time to put a foot down instead of my hip into the ice
I rode more cautiously for the rest of that section.

ParticipantMost of the CCT was passable between Georgetown and Bethesda. However, I still had to walk the perennially problematic section just north of the tunnel, shown below:

ParticipantThanks to the guy who warned me of the black ice just before the shopping center heading West on the Custis. It must have been someone here, because who the heck else is on the Custis at 6:15AM when it’s 34 degrees out on a day that’s supposed to break 60?

ParticipantThere are two bad sections of the Mount Vernon Trail within Alexandria. The section just north of Old Town by the former coal plant has multiple sections of ice and slush. And then south of Old Town, Jones Point Park has a very treacherous stretch of hard ice.

ParticipantLooking out my back window, the snow that we never shoveled from the driveway is melting beautifully in the sun.

ParticipantFairfax County Parkway trail was horrible this morning, but melting fast by 1. I’d guess stuff will be mostly clear by Monday. (Except for the hill by the little bridge between West ox and Franklin farm–it’s in the shade and will be a cx style dismount section for a while.)

ParticipantRode the W&OD from Shirlington to Ashburn (Carolina Brothers). There were only two or three icy places on the way out, and two of those were cleared on the way back. I expect the third at the Wilson Blvd underpass may have a wider track through it by now.

ParticipantHains Point is pretty clear, but a lot of pedestrians were on the road because the walking path along the water still has puddle and mud along it. MVT between 14th St bridge and 4MR was ice free and not at peak crowding, but it’s definitely getting into normal spring traffic. I had a jogger tell me after I called my pass, “Thank you. You know, you’re the first one to do that today,” to which I agreed (percentage of called passes that I witnessed were <10% of the time). There were a lot of people around Gravelly Point, so it was slow going (for good reason) around there. 4MR/W&OD from DCA to US-50 was clear. It's nice to have no ice on the trails

Yep, it was definitely amateur hour.
