It was plowed until citizens bridge, but after that, just a sheet of crunchy goodness until Lee.
But the ice was rough and my tires had traction, and the cracking ice led me to play the ‘let’s pretend we’re on a frozen lake’ game
Awesome
. Well, ice is ok, just not deep snow (too slow!). I should be ok; I can take streets if things get too slow out toward Vienna.

ParticipantAs of 4:30pm:
Most of the 14th St. bridge had melted enough to not need to dismount at the northern end, still like riding through 4″ of sand, but considerable bare concrete for the majority of the bridge length should make it mostly passable tomorrow morning.
Only real bad spots were the shady spots elsewhere, no big surprises.

ParticipantMy friend who lives near the Sandburg St/W&OD crossing just sent me a message that a huge plow went through there on the trail this afternoon! Can anyone confirm? I will try to check it out in the a.m. If I have time.

Something of that nature, yes. Why they left the Sandburg to Gallows stretch untouched, though, is baffling.

ParticipantJust rode W&OD from EFC to Bluemont trail to Ballston. I was riding a Trek hybrid w/ 28s.
Brandymore Castle is still snow packed with some ice.
W&OD has good lines on it but also some ice. I took my time and even walked a little bit (2-3 minutes) before finding some pavement. This was about 0.2 miles west of the overpass before where Custis and W&OD intersect.
The hill at Bluemont is exciting but doable.
Fairfax Drive has a lot of snow and ice in the bike lanes.
So, the bike paths have been plowed, but snow and ice remain on perhaps 75% of the surface.
It took me about 60% longer to get in today than normal. I didn’t fall, but there were definitely days when the ride took less time.
I hope that the trails melt enough that the ice goes away enough so that there are clear paths to take back.

ParticipantFrom this a.m.’s commute:
Rt. 110 Trail is about 30% clear. Still needed wide tires or studs depending on traffic (if you had to leave the clean line), but all in all not bad.
Memorial bridge path was clear.
Ohio Drive is clear.
Water St. is clear.
Annacostia Riverwalk Trail by the Titanic Memorial is snow covered and somewhat icy.
South Cap St. Bridge is a disaster. Really rough on the on and off ramp (downstream side).March 5, 2014 at 1:25 pm #995201Terpfan
ParticipantAnyone have any updates on MVT south of airport toward Belle Haven? And lower section of RCP? I’m guessing nothing has melted on the stupid RCP, but this one I can avoid by taking roads in Georgetown, the MVT part I really can’t, at least until OT heading north.

ParticipantFalls Church -> Reston via W&OD
I got on the trail close to Shreve Road which was snow blown all the way to Sandburg. Some icy spots, but easily doable with studs.
Sandburg to Gallows – had a line of packed snow
Gallows to Maple – for the most part it was tough going. about 20% was packed snow with the rest a combination of loose snow and ice. It sucks when you lose momentum.
Crossing Maple – nice mound of snow blocking the trail which was a blast to go over!
Maple to Ayr Hill – packed snow and ice
Ayr Hill to Hunter Mill – for about 1/2 the way, there was a path of packed snow and ice with spots of ice ruts. Easily doable with studs. Then the packed snow and ice disappeared and you are left with icy ruts and frozen snow. Still, not bad with studs.
Hunter Mill to Buckthorn – Yeah, pretty much untouched. Did see 2 fat tire bike tracks. Snow is about 6 inches here. Tough going until the hill right before Buckthorn – sledding made the snow nice and packed here – easily traversable. Some photos from the morning ride:

ParticipantCrystal City-Long Bridge Park-Boundary Channel Drive-Columbia Island Marina-MVT-14th Street Bridge this morning
Wood bridge over boundary channel was still snow covered as was the trail to the parking lot (which was both empty and nicely plowed). Tunnel under GWMP was generally OK (only had to flintstone a little). Humpback Bridge was rutted and icy. MVT trail to 14th St Bridge ramp was passable as was the ramp. The VA side of the bridge had a fairly clear line but the end near the DC shoreline had me walking my bike.
All in all – a good morning to ride
I was on 32 Schwalbe Marathons.
The trail from the wood bridge over Boundary Channel (about 0645 this morning)

Thanks for these details, Rolo. Looks like I’m taking the roads today. And probably the rest of the week. And probably for the rest of my miserable, snow-bound life!!! 😡

ParticipantMy only observation is that the W&OD from Columbia Pike to Walter Reed had been plowed (some ice on the center line from Columbia Pike to George Mason). For the rest I was on the streets.

….
From Little Falls Rd. to Citizens’ Bridge, there is none of this snow-blown goodness, but the snow’s been packed down and the ice is still crunchy. With fat and/or studly tires, it’s easily close to the regulation amount of fun.

ParticipantNo trail report today. I stayed completely on streets. West Arlington to Rosslyn (including the Clarendon Blvd. Cannonball – wheeeee!) I rode my road bike with 28s and had no problems as long as I took the lane when the snow made the street narrow. Drivers were accommodating, although I was passing them as much as they were passing me.

ParticipantLooking down at the Custis from Lincoln/Monroe St, you could see bits of pavement, but not much. I, too, took to the roads to the 110 trail — should have stayed on Marshall/Meade around the Iwo Jima instead of walking down to the Iwo Jima parking road — still lots of ice. I Wilma Flintstone-d some on the 110 Trail, but I probably didn’t need to. Probably pavement for 70% of the ride. The rest of the ride, including the downstream sidewalk of the Memorial Bridge and the Constitution Ave sidewalk, was great (the reflecting pool paths did not look good).

ParticipantRoosevelt Bridge was pretty bad this AM, walked nearly half of that sidewalk.
