I don’t post very often because I just joined, so I imagine that I will avoid the criticism above. Anyhow, I rode to work this morning on my cyclocross bike and although all the trails are messy, it was a bunch of fun. Potomac Ave and Crystal City were all melted with a salt/sand/slush mixture that wasn’t too pleasant, however once on the GW Parkway side of the Crystal City Access Tunnel it was an ice base with either hard pack or about 2 inches of loose snow. A few snow banks around Roaches Run and very few bare ice spots (this was around 0930 this morning). The hardest part was as mentioned above on the 14th street bridge. All the road slush appears to have ended up on the path and it’s comparable to riding in sand with an ice base. So not the easiest. Four Mile Run trail alongside S. Arlington Mill Drive (between Walter Reed Drive and Shirlington Rd.) was plowed and appeared to be clear and dry around 10:30 this morning – just a little narrower than usual.

    Thank you, Arlington County!

Anyone get a look at the 110 trail past the cemetery? Debating whether to CaBi home…

It had been plowed, so it was better than the trail in front of Iwo Jima. Not bare, but not just icey footprints. I say go for it!

I am so jealous! The concept of plowing a trail seems to be a complete stranger to those who manage the Capital Crescent Trail.

The Holmes Run trail is mostly ice with a few patches of bare pavement that will likely be black ice in the morning. The exception is the connector to the the Eisenhower Avenue trail, it had been plowed!

A portion of the Eisenhower Trail from west of the Holmes Run Trail to just past the Cameron Run Regional Park has been plowed.

Did they repair the sewer in Holmes Run, or is that now a permanent trail feature?

The sewer was repaired, but the last time I rode that way, the trail had not been repaired.

Please don’t take my post as criticism – I didn’t mean it that way at all. I meant that it’s great that what gets people who don’t post much to post is helping out by sharing trail conditions. It reflects well on the bike community.

Yeah, I saw the W&OD was plowed through (?) Falls Church! Awesome. That was one of the worst sections last time. I might ride tmw and take the gamble on the rest just being a bit slow.

Main streets are OK, but not necessarily wide. Side streets are hit and miss. Some are dry, but others are plowed icy and slushy messes. The Curtis behind the wall up from Rosslyn had to be walked with my lightly studded tires. The Fairfax Connector was plowed in at the bottom. Seeing the Curtis there, I took the side roads.

It was plowed until citizens bridge, but after that, just a sheet of crunchy goodness until Lee.

But the ice was rough and my tires had traction, and the cracking ice led me to play the ‘let’s pretend we’re on a frozen lake’ game
