ParticipantThe jogging clubs must bloom immediately after the last frost. This invasive species could be seen spreading all through our parks this afternoon, choking out native life. You can tell how young they are by how far they jump when you call your pass.

Like a fungus.

ParticipantYou ain’t kidding. Ice and snow can be a pain in the arse, but the cold weather does spoil those of us who ride through the winter in that we get so used to having so little traffic on the MUPs. It’s only gonna get worse.
Oh, and the “tourons” are back in full force on the Mall. Families walking four wide taking up the whole path and surprised when someone is going the other direction or rings a bell from behind…

ParticipantNot to worry. We’ll get the trails to ourselves again when the temps hit triple digits.

ParticipantWhat a difference a week makes! Last Monday, I was having to walk my bike to the nearest allegedly plowed street, from which I made a white-knuckle bike ride to the Metro at a time when even Metrobuses weren’t out due to the road conditions. Today, I bicycled from Bethesda to Alexandria in my shirt sleeves, over clear, dry trails. There is some hope of spring!

Oh, I tried. They were just so…heavy.

ParticipantOne good thing about any thunderstorm coming through today is that it might wash away some of the accumulated grit and piles of salt. Of course, when the temperature then drops to 20°F later, and the residual moisture freezes into black ice, we’ll probably wish that crap was still there.

ParticipantFrom the sounds of the forecast, we could probably just let all that grit and salt be scoured away by the gale force winds sans precipitation.

Heck, with the intense winds, maybe the last of the snow and ice will just sublimate overnight?

ParticipantTrail was remarkably clear of debris this morning (Crystal City Connector – MVT – 14th St Bridge). All I saw was a few sticks and twigs.
The wind was brutal but that’s why Rule 9 was written.

There’s still a small snow pile blocking the Custis access cut at Lyon Village. Sigh.

ParticipantWhere was everyone this morning? It was fun, felt like someone else was trying to steer my bike.

There were certainly few cyclists out this AM. I only saw two, and they were both on the Mall, less than half a mile from the end of my 7.5 mile commute route.
(caveat: I left home around 9 AM, but I would still normally have seen many more than that)

ParticipantWell, FFG was out this morning, I think he was surprised to see me on the Custis instead of our usual crossing on the 4MRT.
