Yep, it was definitely amateur hour.
It was pretty quiet when I rolled out at 8:00 am. Of course, it was still 37 degrees at that time. Both Rockford10 and I saw some crazy stuff out there later in the day, on completely different parts of the W&OD. Sometimes I think there should be some kind of training requirement for MUP use.

But as soon as you get all trained up, you tend to avoid the trails and hit the roads in preference.

I’m soooo feeling this right now. Freezing Saddles has taught me how to get to work on surface streets when the trail is impassable, and there is definitely something to be said for just spinning flat out till you get where you’re going, without all the hassle. Today’s ride was a rare Saturday work commute, and as much as I’m for MUPs and seeing folks working it out on the trails, I wasn’t really in the mood for the humanity (that’s probably something else Freezing Saddles has taught me; I kept thinking “where were all you people when it was 9 degrees, or sleeting, or even just dark??”). Fortunately, my commute tends to be off-peak for the trail…we’ll see how that goes as the weather gets nicer.

There were a lot of people around Gravelly Point
The poseurs have emerged from their long hibernation.
Seriously, Graverlly Point was INSANE. And I think every geek was so desperate to bring out their toys that they had not ridden in 4 months. Saw a four person, er, tandem, on WOD. Two adult seats front and back and in between were two kid seats with cranks brought up to their heights.
Never seen that before and I was too desperate to get to beer to check it out. Saw every type of trike and trailor flying down the MVT.
I’ll miss the MVT. Seems like 8 months is a long time to wait till it is safe to venture there again.

ParticipantSpeaking of toys at Gravelly Point, a year ago in the spring there was a guy on “roller skis” complete with ski poles stopped in the middle of the trail watching a plane take off. As it went by, he slowly pivoted to follow it, with his ski poles tucked under his arms. Just as I was coming by the poles swung right out into the path like two spears pointed right at my chest. I barely missed becoming a shishkabob….

Honestly, it was the runners! I was out reasonably early (9:30?) on the MVT, and it seemed like everyone started their training for [fill-in-the-blank-charity-race] yesterday. Groups and groups and groups of runners who were not familiar with the trail or, honestly, running in a pack. With the grass on the side of the trail so soggy, I was reluctant to go off trail on my tires. I *might* have spoken a little sharply to someone (in a pack of 6 runners) running in the wrong lane as I approached.

ParticipantCustis was completely clear this morning. Of course you still can’t get on the trail at the curb cut behind the Lyon Village CVS because there is a two foot high snow pile completely blocking it! I’m glad I have other alternatives of places to shop since it’s clear that that center’s management don’t give a flying rats rear hind quarters. Grrrrrrr 😡

ParticipantThere were still some patches of ice/snow on W O&D out by Reston on Saturday, but all were passable–sans pedestrians with earbuds in who had zero interest in moving at all and then act startled by a bike riding on the snowy ice patch next to them. Now, the FFX Connector, right off the W O&D had a few rough spots of ice patch including one where I got off to walk because there was no path at all. And then West Ox Road’s path was a joke with 2-3′ piles of snow at every curb cut so I chose the road there.

ParticipantTrail conditions: Sand. Lots of Sand. And gravel. And residual salt.

ParticipantAmazing. Simply amazing. Not a bit of ice or snow in sight anywhere, and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect!

ParticipantYeah, hate that, least it’s not the white stuff though.

ParticipantSnow? What snow? You know nothing, (John) Snow!
Today’s commute was the stuff of legends*. Besides the fact that my cassette appears to be loose on the splines and has been making a crunchy noise all week long. Gotta take care of that tonight…
Quoting my own facebook update:
Riding to work on the W&OD this morning, I passed what can only be termed a “double-wide-jogging-stroller-group-run-staging-area” in a parking lot off the side of the trail (just inside the beltway).
A half dozen joggers & strollers, pre-run stretching, hydrating, bundling up kids, getting read to GO!
Yay! Spring is coming!
B
* yes, the past 6 weeks or so of trail-crud got to me.
