ParticipantKillBill Photos. This is sports mode on my lil point-n-shoot. Sorta hit or miss whether someone might be in the frame or not. These are not touched up. Please of course grab shots of yer self.

ParticipantI can’t begin to thank this community enough for the way y’all supported, embraced and helped make this ride happen. Any attempt to list would inevitably have me forgetting some amazing thing that someone did and I don’t want to do that. Thanks to each and every one of you for your giving to this ride in time, charity, energy, sweat and love…. most of all love. We joked around a lot today… I particularly joked about the love I feel for y’all during the ride… but it is sincere. We did some amazing things yesterday. We had 40+ people at the start. We had 14 finishers at the end. The social ride was the backbone of keeping us all rolling.
I was asked “what if this ride gets bigger” many times yesterday… usually with a worrying tone that it might go away. It won’t go away. Likely what will change is my ability to lead from the front. It’ll stress independence and navigation skills, in addition to climbing legs.
I finally found a photo that sums up Kill Bill Century pretty well:
A picture is worth 1000 words. The vast majority of the words associated with this photo are not repeatable in polite company. Here are the rest of my photos for the day. https://www.flickr.com/photos/pedrogringo/sets/72157644526367515/
Thank you again. I’d love to hear your stories of the ride! I’ll share mine as I absorb it all.
I love you people!
Pete

The best thing about steep hills is that they are generally sheltered from the wind. If this was on the eastern shore, then the wind might be a concern.
Actually, it was coming back out into the headwind after stopping for some lunch that drained the last of my energy reserves and made be a DNF at 75 miles/7200 feet. At least that’s my story and I’m sticking with it!

A more interesting one might be number of riders on the ride over mileage, possibly correlated with elevation climbs. Gotta see that attrition rate!

ParticipantI only finished through the combined effort of the social riders and my co-Killers. A thousand times thank you.
I had a huge front tire blow out on Glebe – so loud it sounded like a gunshot. How lucky was I that Jan from Bikenetic takes about 2 seconds to come back and check on me and insists on inspecting my tire – while another guy insists on fixing my flat (and probably does it 5 minutes faster than I could have). Even more lucky is that the front tire tube blew out on flat ground and not on a 40 mph descent.
Can’t think of a better group with which to start and finish. Pete is the man.

This is what killed me. Around mile 45 I found myself behind the lead pack (where I had spent most of the day) but the trailing pack had disappeared by that point and I failed to adjust to that reality and so when I dropped my chain on Military Rd. I looked up and the group was gone. By the time I turned on my garmin route (which I had off b/c the turn notifications every 2 minutes was driving me nuts) and tried to find the trail I was hopelessly lost.
I guess a more determined person would have found the route and rode solo but after some wandering around unfamiliar NoVa roads I bailed with only 52 miles and plenty left in my legs. Oh well, next year. And at least my commute this morning felt great.
Thanks to Pete for putting together this wonderful ride. Some of those hills were sick (but fun).
I was not too far behind Steve O went he went down in the gravel at the bottom of the 41st St climb. He was a hard man and rode on but I suspect he’s feeling it today.

Thank you(?) for what little insanity I stuck around for – I’ve been spoiled by my 6 miles on the W&OD.
You are a crazy person and maybe some year I’ll finish this ride with you.
