Well it is that time of year again… I’m 10 pounds overweight, but I can’t resist the wonderful spectacle that is the Kill Bill Century. I think this is the 6th time I’ve lead the ride and it never gets old with me.

Everyone looks so happy! They haven’t started the ride yet.

For those not familiar with the ride, here it is by the numbers:
    Distance: 108 miles
    Elevation gain: 12,800 feet
Location: North Arlington, Falls Church and a little dip into Annandale.
    Number of turns: 475

    You read that correctly.

Oddly enough, the finishers still look happy??? I think they’re happy that they don’t have to climb any more hills.

Last year we had an amazing ride. We had 20 people start and 10 finish. Everyone that set out with the intent to finish the whole thing did so. By far that is the most impressive year yet. Usually we start with 15-20 people and have anywhere from 2-4 complete the whole ride.

Since the route has almost 500 turns in such a confined area, it tends to be lead by the few of us that have ridden it many times. It has historically stayed together as a group. This group needs to keep moving. Elapsed time for this ride is usually between 10 and 11 hours. I encourage people to study the route and learn as much as they can. I understand that no-one has the encyclopedic knowledge of the route that I have gained by creating it. It helps to have people who are familiar. The link to the full route will be finalized today.

Because the route is quite compact, it is very easy to complete part of the ride. I’ve also heard talk of people setting up party places along the route. Last year rcannon, consularrider and the wonderful folks at Bikenetic all had cheering sections out for us. We had folks ride 30 miles, 60 miles and even join us for the last 35 miles of the ride. While we encourage folks to do shorter versions, please keep in mind that the bus needs to keep rolling if it is going to make it to the finish. I’m not going to be riding this loop quickly, but it will need to keep rolling.

This is a fund-raising ride! While a donation is not required by any means, I ask that people donate to my cause: Gang Rescue and Support Program (GRASP). The fundraising site will also be up later today. GRASP Is a peer-run group that gets kids out of gangs. It has been around for over 20 years and been used as a model all over the US. My mom is co-founder.

Even if you’re not on Facebook, you should be able to see that. It is a public event.

Please let me know if you have questions. I’m happy to answer them!

    Pete

The route stops twice at the Italian Store, easily enough time to shotgun half a pizza.

The social ride has made note of this opportune stop. We’ll be using the Italian Store as lunch stop number one. And yes, there will be more than one.

I’m working on timing between the social ride and the stupid ride to make sure we meet up at the correct questions.

What the others say. There are stops every 20-30 miles for resupply. That said, these stops need to be kept as short as possible. Long stops make it very easy to not get going again. With a large group, like it appears that we’ll have, we will need to keep the nose to the grindstone a bit!

Somehow this brings to mind some jokes that are much too rude to post.

This is why you need an alter ego.

I am my alter ego. The real Shawn is a recluse who loves cars.

The social/stupid ride meet up points have been roughly figured out.

1: Ride first few miles together.
2: Top of Upton climb at 9:35am (Mile 29.2)
    3: Italian Store/CVS 2nd time at 10:55am (Mile 42.4)
    4: Quantico 1:40pm (Best mile EVAR! (69))
5: Top of Sleepy Hollow at 2:40pm (Mile 78)
6: Mount Daniel at roughly 5:35pm (Mile 108)

Thanks KayakCyndi for helping put this all together! You are awesome. :D

This is very helpful. Turns out I won’t be jumping on as everyone goes by my house, as we’ve been invited to a dinner party, and my house is too late in the ride for that. So this list may enable me to tag along somewhere in the middle, depending on when I get home from work. (If I don’t see everyone, though, have fun!)

As Pete said above, the social ride is ready and he posted the mileage. The route is at:

    http://ridewithgps.com/routes/4528775

From a social/fun standpoint here is what I’m planning:

    1. Meet up with the main group at the start and ride to first 2.1 to Powhatan with them.
    a. Either stay put on Powhatan to cheer them on since they go by another 2 times before mile 7.4 or ride some or all of that section with then.
    2. Leave them to their antics and head to Heidelberg Bakery for breakfast (via 22nd street).
    3. Meet up with them again on Upton (their mile 29.2) (9:35amish). Ride with them from there to the Italian Store (9:45am)
    4. Break at the Italian store (or Starbucks) until they return at 10:55am
    5. Head to Quantico/Powhatan (See Steve’s post on page 3 regarding the Keg). ETA We should roll through there about 1:40pm.
    6. Head to Public House #7 (2:40pm) for a pint before rejoining the fun and games of Barcroft.
    7. After Barcroft we’ll need to refuel so I’m thinking Frozen Dairy Bar. Then meeting them at the end for Mt. Daniel (5:35pm)

From the looks of it we have a super short ride between Upton and the first stop at the Italian store and then a fairly long break between the second Italian store roll-through (10:55 am) and Quantico (1:40pm). We can, depending on interest, either ride some additional distance with the main pack in Arlington and save our Italian store break until the second roll-through, continue on some route, or just chill.

In all the day will be fluid and fun. If you plan on joining us please PM me and I’ll send my cell phone along to facilitate meet-ups.

Oh, and I’m supply sidewalk chalk, cow bells and a few select hand-ups but if anyone has other things to contribute bring them along!

p.s. If you can only do half the day you can break it down into the start to Steve’s (although if you stop here we might think it is just for the beer). For the afternoon you could start Public House #7 (I can tell you where some very convenient parking can be found if needed) and ending with the main group.

I started training for this last night by drinking some beers and falling asleep on the couch.

    UNSTOPPABLE.

After hemming und hawing, I’ve finally donated.

This .. means I’m in, doesn’t it? Sith.

All I ask is that when I drop, someone sweep me on to the sidewalk so I don’t get squelched by traffic.

Don’t worry, the social ride will act as the sweep.
