ParticipantOK, now that this is up, I will feel safe in performing much needed maintenance this evening – new chain, cassette, front tire.
That said, we may need one for May, too:
April 1, 1924: This April Fools Day Storm produced the latest recorded major snowfall (4 or more inches). Baltimore recorded over 9 inches of snow and Washington received 5 inches. The latest snow ever recorded at Baltimore was a trace on May 9, 1923. In Washington, the latest snow was seen on May 10, 1906, when a trace fell.

ParticipantWell, there are other trail conditions problems than snow and ice, things like derechos, floods, hurricanes, and the always enjoyable tree trimming and sewer work.

ParticipantNE Branch still messed up by the rail bridge erosion creation zone. Detour is back up to Alt Route 1 and Decatur street unless your up for wet feet the rest of the way home.

ParticipantGeorgetown Branch Trail has moved from “frozen ruts of death” to “muddy fishtails of fun”. What a wonderful commute today!

ParticipantSo, should I put my bar mitts in the wash tonight?

ParticipantThis was the snowiest March in the area since 1960 (in terms of days with at least 1″ of snow).
Maybe Mother Nature will take pity on us in April. Or not.

ParticipantThank you for posting that. I ride that trail every Thursday. And while others have been merrily posting about how all the trails are now just fine, I’ve felt very lonely in my slipping, sliding, and getting thrown one way and the other by deep ruts in the trail. At least now I have company in my misery!

ParticipantThere are “sidewalk closed” signs up on the Custis just west of the bridge over Lee Hwy b/n Rosslyn & Courthouse. Fear not: the Custis isn’t closed, just the sidewalk connecting the Custis to Veitch. There are detour signs up that take you through McCoy Park to 20th St to Veitch. However, I would think it better to take the on road route — westbound, turn right on Scott, which bends around and becomes Veitch, and eastbound, head straight on Veitch and it bends around to become Scott.
The closing looks to be related to the construction at the Bergman’s site, which is supposed to involve improvements to the Custis Trail as well, right? When are they planning to do that work? Do we have a contact for this project (like we do with the FMR/bridge demolition/detour-that-hates-cargo-bikes)?
Thanks

ParticipantI skipped my usual W&OD exit point with the intention of doing an Arlington loop…got as far as the Custis connector and decided the trail was just too crazy to make it worth the frustration. The ice has been replaced by clueless n00bs.

That and folks who I was guessing weren’t newbies per se, just jerks. My prizewinner for the evening was the bozo simply HAD to squeeze between me and the power pole on the W&OD just east of the Brandymore Castle hill about 1745, because
forbid he should take the right side of the trail which might cost him 0.1 seconds at Warp 56. I shouted at that guy, not that it did any good. April 1, 2014 at 11:23 pm #997404brendan

The trail will definitely be slower (edit: for the non-insane riders, that is) from yesterday afternoon onward. Maybe head away from the crowding first, if adding miles to the commute?

ParticipantIt was like a zombie apocalypse on the trails this evening. Everyone was weaving randomly and displaying no higher brain functions.

Yeah, me, too. I even found myself slolloming the paving lines on the way home on the W&OD

ParticipantMVT was harsh. Mid 50s. A few specks of gravel. Sunlight. Moderate bike traffic. Rowing team in their racing shells out on the Potomac. No Canadian geese in sight.
I don’t know how I survived.

ParticipantThere is some stingy mud under the Wilson Blvd bridge as well as cones to mark the hazardous conditions here. A fellow wiped out there this morning. Of course, the solution is to throw cones around it and call it a day instead of picking up a shovel and spending tops 5 minutes clearing it. Arlington? C’mon man. I’ll soon report this on the Arlington app. Stay safe San Diego.
