What are the best and worst things to happen for bike commuting in the Washington, DC area over the last 12 months? They can be either for the collective good/bad or more of a personal note. I’ll go first

Best – Freezing Saddles Competition 2013. A simple idea turned into not only a fun way to pass the cold dark WINDY months of Winter 2013, but also a great way to meet other forum members, improve my knowledge of winter riding, and a re-orientation of my definition of bike commuting weather. Plus I have a kick-ass Bike Arlington Scarf to show for it!!!

Worst – This is a hard one, Things are generally getting better. I would have to say that jack-ass who hit me and tried to run me over because he “didn’t see me”. (Read didn’t look, cut the corner and sped up.) No damage to me or my bike (I screamed at him and he stopped before doing more than hitting my front tire with his bumper, but it has made me a little more anxious at that same intersection, and I never was scared of traffic before (except that one time I tried to ride down Richmond Highway near Ft Belvoir).

Best: Kidical Mass Arlington (can you believe it just started last year?)

    Worst: ACPD. So disappointing…

I want to point out that there was a tweet by BikeArlington this morning mentioning an Officer Smith of the ACPD, who apparently did an awesome and thoughtful job in dealing with an aggressive driver and a cyclist. ACPD also scored a conviction of a repeat bicycle thief this past year and I’ve seen them actively investigating other likely bicycle thefts. They do a whole lot of good for us as well and I think they deserve credit and our thanks for that. My own view is that positive reinforcement might help things progress further.

And ACPD is certainly not Falls Church police force or Loudon police force. They dont ticket cyclists (to my knowledge)
