    Most of my events are outside the DC area next year.

    I have unfinished business with Total200 for sure. I’ve done it geared, but need to knock it out fixie to really be done with it.

    Jeremiah Bishop’s Alpine GF will be back if it doesn’t conflict with other things going on.

    MoCo Epic, if the schedule doesn’t conflict, will be done on a tandem next year. Not sure what 140 miles on a mountain bike tandem will be like… or who will be stoking, but I will find a way to make that happen.

    I’ve heard talk of an official Fairfax Epic that links a bunch of trail networks in NOVA together. I also heard someone talk about a 100km tour of Patapsco mountain bike ride. Those are somewhat fictitious events at this point, but may come to reality. Fairfax Epic will happen informally at least.

    I will find at least two opportunities to do Kill Bill next year. I’ll lead one those who want to try it, and I’ll ride another with people who know they can, but want to do it again. It is too much for me to try to do both in one ride. I don’t have the strength for that.

    Out of town events= DirtyKanza200, Private Idaho100, Chupacabra (100km mtb race in Mexico).

    I want to put together an informal FredShed epic. Start at Gambrill, ride all the way out to the blue trail overlook at the north end of the shed and back. Would be 35-40 miles of ultra-tech rocks of doom. :D

    The only question is whether I’d make everyone drop down to the valley of doom and climb back out on the first leg. The blue climb is nasty enough that I used to shuttle it as a DH run. :D

The Westernport Wall sounds like a challenge beyond the scope of most GFs in this area. This year they have added a Gentlemans’ Race if just getting that ride done is not enough.     I have some business to settle at the Jeremiah Bishop GF in September so I am going to do my best to be out there for that one (http://www.alpineloopgranfondo.com/)

    Civil War Century is no Mountains of Misery (which I may sign up for) and isn’t billed as a fondo, but it’s about 7k feet of climbing and a fantastically supported ride. I definitely plan on doing it again in 2013.

    I’ve got no idea about the ride, but The Storming of Thunder Ridge (which is a week earlier than Mountains of Misery) might be a good fit.

    The words, “Fantastically supported” caught my eye. Do tell.
    I mean, my idea of “fantastically supported” involves a cabana boy name Roberto and dirty mojitos.
    I suspect this is something less than that.
    And yet, I’m intrigued.

    This is a beautiful ride, but I had some issues with the organization. Maybe they’ve improved it since about 5 years ago. It was supposed to be my prep ride for my first Mountains of Misery.

    It was a nasty cold wet spring day, and most of the people who were planning to do the century bailed and took the shortcut for the 100K ride. I guess I was last on the course at some point and everybody at the final rest stop and the support vehicle guy wanted to go home and get warm, so they more or less insisted I SAG in.

    I remember the organizer saying to me, “sorry you weren’t able to complete the ride.” I told her I was ABLE to complete the ride, but wasn’t allowed to…

    I’ve done MoM three times, but had to miss last spring because I was sick. This is about the best organized event I’ve ever done, and the only one with actual timings recorded (despite being “NOT a race” — sure…)

    I made it to the top the first time, and the last time. I should have quit while I was ahead, but as of right now I’ll probably do it one more time before I get too old and feeble…

    Aww I had something similar happen on my very first metric. A severe thunderstorm (tornado warnings, hail and the everything else) caused everyone to get scooped up in our segment. That is a very defeating feeling that I would not much care to repeat. After that I started working on increased my AMS to outrun the rain, with mixed results.

    I really do hope you get out there and get play in the mountains. I do not look forward to the day my body is done with physical challenges but I know it is inevitable. I raise my glass to you sir.

    It is looking like I will be out of the country for probably the two weeks leading up to MoM so I do not think this will be the year I get to go do that one. :( However I am hopeful that that is the only wedding I will be attending and I will be able to do Garret County and JBs Fondo in September, and in order to meet my goal for the year I think the Total200 will have to be in there. Garret county is the last week of June so BikeMS would be a good last distance training ride (first weekend in June) if anyone is interested :)

    It is nice to see that I am not the only one planning what to do now. I guess many of us have that itch.
