I think it would be really interesting and useful to tally the total miles BikeArlington members and visitors have ridden in 2011 plus a few other stats. This would also be a nice way for BikeArlington to advertise how many gallons of gas we’ve saved and the like.

As a result, I am volunteering to collect such data and put it out there in tabular and summary format.

If you would like to participate, please go to http://goo.gl/hpK3o. The following info is requested:

    1) Total miles ridden for the year (excluding indoor cycling on stationary bikes and trainers). Your best estimate is fine. Please combine commuting and recreational miles ridden anywhere (not just the DC metro area). Include Capital Bikeshare miles, bike rentals, etc.

    2) Total trips (your best estimate is fine). Please combine commuting and recreational trips.

    3) Whether you are male or female (optional). Researchers always say women’s particpation is an indicator of whether cycling is taking off in an area (due to perceived safety issues) so that is why I think this would be an interesting statistic to collect.

    4) If you bike commute, the jurisdictions you travel between.

    5) If you want your data to remain anonymous.

I propose posting everyone’s responses to questions 1 and 2 online since we all know how competitive / curious we are :p. A summary will also be provided as well.

I wonder if we’ll hit 100K miles? Will the women beat the men? Will we beat CaBi? How much CO2 emissions have we avoided? Come on lurkers – now is the time to sign up on this forum and be counted. We need to show politicians and the rest of the world how much people are cycling out there!

You’ve only got a couple of more days to get your numbers up. Start pedaling!

Any way to correct the listed gender, I’m sure my wife would be surprised to learn I’m a female. That’s still not legal in Virginia.
