I think it would be really interesting and useful to tally the total miles BikeArlington members and visitors have ridden in 2011 plus a few other stats. This would also be a nice way for BikeArlington to advertise how many gallons of gas we’ve saved and the like.

As a result, I am volunteering to collect such data and put it out there in tabular and summary format.

If you would like to participate, please go to http://goo.gl/hpK3o. The following info is requested:

    1) Total miles ridden for the year (excluding indoor cycling on stationary bikes and trainers). Your best estimate is fine. Please combine commuting and recreational miles ridden anywhere (not just the DC metro area). Include Capital Bikeshare miles, bike rentals, etc.

    2) Total trips (your best estimate is fine). Please combine commuting and recreational trips.

    3) Whether you are male or female (optional). Researchers always say women’s particpation is an indicator of whether cycling is taking off in an area (due to perceived safety issues) so that is why I think this would be an interesting statistic to collect.

    4) If you bike commute, the jurisdictions you travel between.

    5) If you want your data to remain anonymous.

I propose posting everyone’s responses to questions 1 and 2 online since we all know how competitive / curious we are :p. A summary will also be provided as well.

I wonder if we’ll hit 100K miles? Will the women beat the men? Will we beat CaBi? How much CO2 emissions have we avoided? Come on lurkers – now is the time to sign up on this forum and be counted. We need to show politicians and the rest of the world how much people are cycling out there!

You’ve only got a couple of more days to get your numbers up. Start pedaling!

Thanks to others for the group edits. Corrections regarding counting commutes and the “who” for the conduct of the survey have been made.

Round trip commute = two trips
    Who = us

I’d be interested to know how the median mi/trip and mi/person end up. I bet there’s a lot of outliers on this forum! 1%ers etc :D

Wow, if this is truly representative of the cycling population in this area, we have a real gender imbalance that is far more than I would expected given the cycling infrastructure here.

Do people want to see the listing of usernames and mileages?

Gender balance doesn’t surprise me that much. That said, DC has been said to do better than most, with a 38/62 split – see http://greatergreaterwashington.org/post/9885/women-how-comfortable-do-you-feel-biking/

I believe that Capital Bikeshare has an even higher female ridership than that too!

Here’s an interesting article on the topic of female riders from last summer: http://grist.org/biking/2011-06-20-bicyclings-gender-gap-its-the-economy-stupid/

While I likely will be a bit humbled by the accomplishments of my fellow riders, I would love to see the data!

We should consider ways to enlist the riding clubs and local shops to increase the number of individuals responding next year.

444 K miles is pretty impressive – that is 37 autos each driving 12 K miles/year off the road! If we were to assume that each of those miles would have been a single person in a 25 mpg auto, those cars would have consumed 17,770 gallons of gas.

    Way to go!

Based on what I see on my commuting rides, I think the gender balance is better than that in our little survey. I might be imagining things, but I would guess that at least 35% of the riders on my route (FMR, MVT, Mall) are women. I’ve also been surprised at how many women are riding through the winter.

Also remember this isn’t surveying riders. It’s surveying people who know about this forum :)

Lots of no-big-deal commuters probably ride lots of no-big-deal miles, but don’t bother to visit specialized forums like this one to discuss it.
