ParticipantKLizotte…Thank You for such a wonderful idea!!!
A great way to close out the new year, but also, we’ll be reapplying for the Bike Friendly Community status in the hopes of moving up from Silver to Gold. We won’t be applying until later next year, but “organic community involvement” was apparently an area where we could improve. I think the fact that you are volunteering to collect the data yourself is a good indicator of this organic community involvement (meaning it wasn’t BikeArlington’s idea).
I fully support and encourage this survey! It will be interesting to get the results.
Thanks for putting this together. Happy Pedaling and Happy New Year!

ParticipantIf you don’t want to compile it all by hand, since there are technically 801 forum members, I made up a quick google form so everyone can enter their own data. (I think) here’s the link:
let me know if it works, and KLizotte, PM me and I can add you as an admin on the form so you can play with the data if you like!

ParticipantGreat idea! I’ll send the data as soon as I get home from my final ride tomorrow.
Also, if you need or want any help with data let me know. I have this weird love of playing with data in spreadsheets and making graphs etc…

ParticipantThanks for setting up the google form.
My mileage is estimated based on individual routes measured when I still used a computer regularly. (That was several years ago.)
Now, the best I can do is gauge my speed by counting cadence while my wristwatch beeps on the minute.December 30, 2011 at 2:58 pm #934011Greenbelt
ParticipantDone. Thanks for the good idea.

ParticipantCool! I wasn’t aware such freebie aps existed. Thanks for doing this.
I will be adding my own data tomorrow night; am planning on taking advantage of the warm weather for an end of the year excursion around town.

ParticipantI’m going to feel quite inadequate on the same page as all of the real road warriors here but I ante’d up. Where / how to see the results?

ParticipantDone. One thing that didn’t get defined is how to calculate number of bike trips. I log my daily commute as two trips so that’s the way I reported it, but if that should be treated as just one trip my number needs to be reduced by 225.

ParticipantI counted a daily commute as two trips as well. I think that’s the only way that makes sense. e.g. one morning I crashed and broke my arm = 1 trip. There was no return trip that day.
I realized I underestimated my total miles that I answered but not by more than maybe 200 miles.

ParticipantAdded my data. I counted my commutes as one ride because my spreadsheet for tracking mileage is daily, so you can’t log two rides in one day. I only commuted like 10 times though so it shouldn’t make a huge difference. Also, many of my trips are 2-3 mile trips to the grocery store and back so they’re not very significant mileage wise, but technically a trip, and one where I would have driven otherwise. Overall, I ended up averaging about 34miles/ride.
I’m planning on commuting more this year, not necessarily to save time or money (unless gas prices explode), but partly because I miss it, and partly because the hill up Mass Ave between Minnesota and Alabama in Southeast is excellent for getting back in shape!

ParticipantI counted each of my commute legs as a trip, often, I’ll go for a lunch ride, and to me, that would make three bike rides or trips in a day.

ParticipantHmm. I counted roundtrips. Probably need to determine how to best capture and present the info and have folks resubmit.

I did the same.. each leg was a trip, that covered the days I may have only done one way for some reason or another.

ParticipantAnyone from BikeArlington or WABA want to weigh in on the commonly used definitions of a bicycle trip and how best to explain that in the survey?
