19 yo cyclist hit by SUV and killed crossing Veirs Mill Road just SE of Rockville

From the sounds of things he was likely in the cross walk where the Matthew Henson Trail crosses Veirs Mill. The SUV that hit him was heading west which means it was heading downhill on a straight stretch of road.

I’ve been looking at the street view for a couple of minutes, and I do not see any signals for the car traffic. I see the beg buttons, but what do they activate?

I think the street view image is from just before they actually hung the signals but they are indeed there (or were the last time I used that crossing.)

This trail crossing has always been dangerous – even with the flashing lights activated by the beg buttons.

Police issued 72 tickets for failing to yield at this intersection during a 2.5 hour sting several years ago… Sounds like they need to return.

The Washington Post ran an article on Dec. 31 that discussed how extremely dangerous that crossing is, including this:

The crosswalk — where a bike and pedestrian trail crosses Veirs Mill Road in Montgomery County, about a half-mile northwest of Randolph Road — is considered so risky that Tuesday a county police officer sent a report to the state that more or less said, “I told you so.”
