Because you will be riding one of the most efficient means of transport, my recommendation is to look for ways to use that efficiency. As you get more comfortable, you will likely be looking for ways to add miles to your route.

I’ll have to go on faith on this one. At this point I am all about making the ride shorter! I do like your route around the tidal basin, though. It sounds like a scenic way to cool down from the ride.

    Thanks,

I need to read these threads before trying to figure out these routes. On Saturday, I was going to bike from College Park to OT Alexandria, but it looked like it was about to storm. I took the green line down to L’Enfant, which was packed with people coming from Nats game. So I decided to leave the station. I couldn’t figure out which side the elevator was on and I figured Metro’s station manager wouldn’t let me exit at the escalator only–nope, they did. It put me out right near that underpass, but I couldn’t remember for the life of me where that popped out and I figured better safer than sorry so I trekked back north then west on Indpendence and back down my usual 15th St route. I am now going to read all of these requests for direction threads. (Also, when is Google map’s app going to have the biking directions feature for iphones, grr).

It’s gotta be a hard sell for google to do any new development on the iphone app, since apple’s trying to compete with it, and has a habit of kicking out apps that they don’t like for whatever reason.

I was the same way when I first started bike commuting. Nowadays I’ll throw in a Haines Point loop (or two) every now and then just for laughs.

Personally, I’d ride an extra 1/4 to 1/2 mile to avoid hauling my bike up/down stairs. I think you’d end up sweatier doing that than just riding around the block.
