“The agency says the water receded faster than expected”

So, like, where did the water go?

Messy? I flew down 7th NW because no one was parked in the right lane at Mt Vernon Square. Except for the crazy lady driving in the crosswalk so she could turn left before the oncoming traffic started up (one of my pet peeves since being hit in a crosswalk by a driver doing that) and the workers at my building blocking a heavily used crosswalk to do nothing that I could ascertain, my commute was wonderful.

Metro service has been restored downtown. I don’t know if 12th St. NW has been reopened.

From the mud and sand I saw all the way down 12th St. I’d say it went down 12th St.

Photos from the WMATA Twitter feed:

The Blue/Orange/Silver line tracks at Metro Center were covered by some water, but only above the tracks, not up to the platform. Then the water flowed downhill to Federal Triangle where the tracks were flooded up to the platforms.

Plus a photo of 12th St. NW, between E and F Streets:

Expect 12th St. NW to remain closed throughout the afternoon and into the evening.

I was disappointed that WaPo didn’t list “take bikeshare” as one of there alternates…

Does anyone know if Cabi increased (or needed to) its bike balancing activities around the core for people using the bikeshare system as a workaround?

I’m wondering if that would even be possible, to increase bike balancing. They already have difficulty with getting to the downtown stations on regular morning rush hours. (Evenings too.) If there was heavier than usual car traffic, the rebalancing vans wouldn’t have been able to make extra trips.

CaBi might have been useful for some people who were traveling around the downtown core, but it wouldn’t have been able to handle a huge rush of extra riders from Metro.

That said, rider numbers are usually much lower in December than they are in the spring and early summer. I didn’t see any bike trip numbers, but I did check the CaBi map to see what the station/bike situation looked like yesterday, a couple hours after the morning peak. Most of the usual downtown stations were full, but I did notice that some stations around McPherson Square and Metro Center had more than a few empty docks. Not something I would normally expect there. Then again, that may have more to do with the fact that it’s December. The dock/bike numbers look somewhat similar today as yesterday. I don’t know what that means, but it’s the only data I have right now.

True, but having cycling be mentioned as an alternative in the WaPo would have been good for cycling. A lot of people just don’t know all the advantages of cycling, and on a day like yesterday, we have ALL THE ADVANTAGES.
